I attended the new Hyannis Stop & Shop Opening last night and it was FANTASTIC! Anne Moulin greeted me and helped us tour the new 65,000+ square foot facility. It is enormous and management has gone above and beyond to bring the consumers more product than ever!!!!
I was MOST impressed with the effort they put into creating an organic and natural foods section. They placed all the Nature's Propmise products as well as other mom faves in the same two aisles together! By having such a large store they are able to offer more family friendly products for health conscious families! And it is directly next to the fruits and veggies = BONUS! I LOVE not having to traverse the whole store and having everything in one section! It will definitely make shopping with a small child ten times easier to get in and out!!! Plus they have horned melons!!! Those are sure to entertain children as you pass by as well!

1.) I find myself struggling to eat healthy. The chip, soda, candy diet is not working. What are some easy and quick nutritious meals to keep me energized enough to chase after my toddler? ~ Katie, Falmouth
I would suggest planning ahead and making small baggies of celery sticks stuffed with peanut butter, carrot sticks with slices of Swiss cheese, almond’s with dried fruit such as cranberries, raisins and apricots. You could also make
small Tupperware containers of yogurt with slices of fresh fruit such as apples, pineapple, cantaloupe and blueberries.
If yogurt isn’t one of your favorites, you could try cottage cheese. Essentially you want to create small, fresh packages of nutritionally sound meals. The less processed the better!!!
2.) I feel like my son is not getting enough vegetables in his diet. How much should he get a day or per week? What are some creative ways to incorporate them so he will eat them? ~ Lauren, Harwich
Toddlers should have (3) servings of veggies per day. A serving is one half of a cup of cooked diced vegetables – a half cup of tomato sauce also constitutes a serving of vegetables. Make sure your toddler’s veggie servings amount to a rainbow of color each day so that he or she gets a variety of vitamins and antioxidants. Sweet potatoes, broccoli, and tomatoes are all nutritional powerhouses. Any vegetable diced can be placed in scrambled eggs, in a dish of pasta
and on top of a pizza. Any vegetable covered with cheese is usually enticing and inviting to a toddler. I have even diced up butternut squash and added it to some macaroni noodles with some grated cheese at the daycare and the children never even guessed there was a vegetable lurking in their meal!!!
3.) What are some healthy snacks that I can share with my child? ~ Ashley, Mashpee
I suggest making snacks a fun time with your child to explore new tastes and textures. Make the event an opportunity for the both of you to discover different types of produce together… make it fun!!!!
About 1 cup each of fresh fruits: Watermelon, honeydew, cantaloupe, banana, pineapple, and strawberries.
Wash and cut fruit into ½ inch thick slices. Discard rinds and peels. Press cookie cutters into the melon and pineapple slices to make different shapes. Peel the banana and cut it into chunks with a butter knife. Put all the pieces of fruit in their own small bowls so they are easy to reach. Hold up a skewer so you can see the pointy end, and very carefully, start sliding fruit onto the skewer in any order you like. Lay the filled skewers
on the serving plate. Repeat until all the fruit is gone.
Tuscan Bean Dip
1 can or 15.5 ounces cannellini beans, ¼ cup extra virgin olive oil, 3 garlic cloves (peeled), veggies, chips and crackers for serving.
Open the can of beans and pour them into the bowl of the food processor. Add the olive oil and garlic. Process until the mixture is smooth. Remove the blade in the processor and use a rubber spatula to scrape the mixture into a serving bowl. Serve with your favorite veggies, chips, or crackers.
Tropical Celery Boats
1 can or 8 ounces crushed pineapple, drained; 4 celery stalks (washed and patted dry); 3 tablespoons soft cream cheese.
Open the can of pineapple and drain it through a strainer over a bowl. Save the juice to drink or use later. Trim the ends and any leafy parts off the celery stalks. Cut the stalks in half across the middle. Put the cream cheese in a bowl and add pineapple. With a rubber spatula mix the two together until even. Use a butter knife to spread the mixture into the hollows of the celery stalk halves. Place the filled stalks on the plate and cover in the refrigerator until you are ready to serve.
My name is Ashley, and I live a half priced life. I live this type of life to survive, to feed my family, to save money for things I could otherwise not afford like unexpected car repairs or an emergency trip to the dentist. Sometimes I wish I had a "lavish life"-one where I wouldn't have to worry so much about my household budget, or how high the heating bill will be for a particular month. I do my absolute best in life in every aspect of my personal existence, but no matter how hard I try- I struggle with being healthy.
You see, sometimes I feel like "being healthy" is a luxury
In the modern world, women are not only the primary caretakers of their family; they are also contributors to the female workforce. Women face quite the conundrum when it comes to taking care of themselves. At the end of workday, after homework, dinner, bath time, and bed time- who the heck wants to exercise? Also, who wants to wake up at 4am before the kids to fit exercise in?
Humans aren't rabbits, so why eat bowls full of salad day in and day out? Personally, I need variety and depth in my food. I need two bites of a brownie (if not three) to satisfy a chocolate craving, and gosh darn-it sometimes I need an ice cream sundae! Yet, I always feel guilty when I steal a naughty nibble because I know I'm not going to get the extra exercise I need to burn those additional calories.
Woman-guilt, it's a *bleep*!
So, what happens if you can't afford a membership to the gym, or a sitter to watch your kids while you go to the gym, or even someone to help with the kids so you can exercise at home or go out for a run? What happens if you don't have the money to purchase healthy foods all the time? What happens if you can't make the time, or find the time to exercise because your schedule is so busy with work and family that you can't even see straight at the end of the day? What happens if you don't have a family to care for, but work 6-7 days a week to survive, allowing you little time to pay attention to your own needs?
Being healthy becomes a luxury. I would love someone to prove me wrong on my theory, or at least give me magical
powers that will allow me to wake up at 4am without feeling psychotic. If you could also throw in a mute button for my extremely loud and co-dependent cat, who yowls at me, at the top of her lungs, waking up my kids the minute my feet
hit the floor- well that would be awesome too! Seriously though, this post is meant to generate response- whether you agree or disagree with my theory.

Please, don't misunderstand- I do exercise and I do eat as healthy as possible. I was just one of those people not blessed with amazing genetics, and for me- being healthy and staying healthy is an everyday struggle. I assure you, I do not sit on my duff, eating from my couponing stockpile, drooling on my couch. Promise ;)
Grocery stores price items around holidays, customer shopping patterns & seasonal produce. Did you know which entrance you choose to enter a store would play a factor in how much you spend? Studies have shown that customers who enter a store through the right-hand entrance & shop counterclockwise will spend more than those who do the opposite. Next time, try shopping clockwise & you will probably save some money!
Easter has come & gone. As you have probably noticed, all that candy & those plastic Easter eggs are on the clearance racks. This is a great time to stock up on non-perishable items for next year. Earth Day was April 22nd & most stores will have organic foods, reusable bags & energy efficient items on sale. Like years past, Target will be giving away free reusable bags to all customers on Earth Day. Since most grocery items are priced lower at Target than traditional grocery stores, you may want to check them out on the 22nd & grab a free bag while supplies last!
Cinco de Mayo is right around the corner & all traditional Mexican food items will be priced to move. Make sure to stock up on chips, salsa & refried beans. Beer & tequila will also be discounted, so if you’re looking to celebrate after the kids go to bed, stock up!
Our official kick-off to summer will be here before we know it. Memorial Day is known as one of the two holidays great for deals on everything you need to BBQ (Labor Day is the other holiday). So towards the end of May, look for deals
on hot dogs, hamburgers, condiments, paper plates & sunscreen ~ everything you need to start the summer off on a good note.
