Name of Owner: Lorri Devlin
.) How long have you lived on Cape Cod? I grew up summering in the Wings Neck area of Buzzards Bay, and moved to the Cape full time eight years ago.
.) When and why did you start your business? I started CapeKids in 2009, right after I began working full time as a school nurse. I noticed the lack of quality, organic, reasonably priced boutique clothing on the Cape. Other boutiques charge so much, and their children's clothing looked more like something teens or adults would wear. I wanted kids to have soft, comfy clothes that were outdoors-friendly, since I believe kids are healthier when they're connected to nature. They're only little once, and childhood is so precious. Why hurry kids into looks that are too old for them? CapeKids clothing and accessories are sweet, soft, innocent and nature-inspired. Connecting children with nature is a passion of mine.
.) What do you LOVE most about your job? I love seeing the joy on the faces of parents and grandparents when they talk about their little ones. I love hearing their stories, seeing their baby photos, and meeting the babies! Most of all, I love the connection we have with our customers. It goes beyond a simple purchase. They know that as parents ourselves, we share their joys and concerns about the daunting yet miraculous responsibility of raising a child.
.) How does your business help/impact local families? I'm a very small business and honestly, it's hard to stay afloat in our seasonal economy. But it's important to me to give back. I donate to organizations that support our local children and families. We donate retail space to the Village Baptist Church to support its Uganda Project-a group of local women who make lovely dresses for girls in Uganda. I also donated to the popular WGBH Kids special, "China-Through My Eyes", which featured two Cape Cod girls traveling to China. It was fun to see CapeKids' little Minnow logo travel across the globe!
.) In your opinion, what are the biggest challenges facing Cape Cod Families? People who don't live on Cape Cod don't know how tough it can be to survive and thrive in a seasonal resort location. Limited job opportunities and crime are two things I worry about when I think of our families.
.) If you had to pick your favorite local spot on Cape Cod (not a business), where would you pick and why? Can I pick two? First is Cotuit, where I live, because it's a quintessential Cape Cod village, complete with white picket fences adorned with roses, friendly folks, beautiful water views, and it's steeped in history. Second is Wenaumet Bluffs, where I spent my childhood swimming, catching fireflies and spending long days in the natural beauty of Cape Cod.
.) Please offer a tip for our Mom Audience: As a seasoned mom with two grown sons, I can tell you that you'll miss those little people when they've grown. Every chance you get, hug them. Tell them you love them, and why. Spend time together without electronics. Tuck them in at night with a story ..in soft lobster pjs from CapeKids ;) Shelter them from concerns they're too young to understand. And remember, you're not perfect, and neither are they. Enjoy each other. Now I have to stop because I'm getting teary and want to call my sons!
.) Any other information you would like us to share? I want to thank all the families that have shopped at CapeKids over the years. We're having a huge mid-summer sale right now so if you haven't visited, now's the time to save 40-90% on summer clothes! Stock up for next summer and save.
