1.) How long have you lived on Cape Cod?
I moved to the Cape in 2000 to start my family.
2.) When and why did you start your business?
After I had my first son, we went back to visit some friends in CT who also had a young child. They told me about this fabulous music program they were taking their daughter to called Music Together. Seeing as how I was a musician, they said I should really look into teaching this program. As soon as I got back I looked it up and immediately went to take the training. Every moment of that training was like a lightbulb lighting up in my brain. I knew I had to offer this awesome program on the Cape so I applied for my license through Music Together and got started in 2003 when I was pregnant with my second son.
3.) What do you LOVE most about your job?
I LOVE seeing all those happy little faces staring up at me every day when I walk into the classroom. I LOVE teaching today's parents the importance of music education starting with their infants. I LOVE seeing the look of recognition from all the parents when someone's child demonstrates something I've been discussing in the class. And I LOVE to sing everyday!
4.) How does your business help/impact local families?
The families who come through my doors don't always know what they're getting into! A lot of people just think it's something to do with their child every week to keep them busy. What they learn over time is that all children are musical and all children can gain basic music competence (being able to sing in key and hold a beat) if given a musically rich, developmentally appropriate environment early on. Once they realize how much actual learning even an infant can do and the high quality of the materials they get to take home to continue the music learning there, the price seems cheap!
5.) In your opinion, what are the biggest challenges facing Cape Cod Families?
The biggest challenges facing Cape Cod families is work and housing. We are losing a lot of our young families because they cannot find steady work that will pay the rent on the very limited housing we have available. Landlords are pushing out the future of the Cape for the high weekly rental rates they can pull in in the summer. Something is going to need to change in our economy if we want to keep our young families not just living, but thriving on the cape.
6.) If you had to pick your favorite local spot on Cape Cod (not a business), where would you pick and why?
My favorite spot would have to be Nauset Beach. I just love it there.
7.) Please offer a tip for our Mom Audience:
Sing with your child. Every day. Without the radio or TV on. Just MAKE music and your child will start to also. You don't wait until your child can speak before you start speaking to them do you? Then don't wait until the can "do" music before you make music with them. It's how they learn!
8.) Any other information you would like us to share? (upcoming events? Awards? Anything you think our community would find useful, Etc)
MMAC has won Cape Cod Life Magazine's Best Kids Activity Award for 9 years. There's a reason for that! A lot of other kids programs have come and gone but we've been around for 12 years and counting. Free library and playgroup programs are great for filling time, but when you want a real, educational program that will last your child a lifetime, come see us. Music Together is the gold standard in early childhood music and movement programs for kids newborn to 5 years. Developed 27 years ago, they continually update the program when research dictates a new finding in the area of early childhood music learning. Check out a class for free if you want. With locations all over the Cape there's sure to be one not too far from you. Eastham, Harwich, Sandwich, Falmouth and Plymouth. We also offer Ukulele lessons, GroovyKids Yoga, and Rhythm Kids classes for your slightly older child and as next steps from Music Together.
