So many people are unaware of the toxic chemicals in their everyday products and how they effect their health and well-being as well as the environment. I help educate families on how to live safer and healthier lifestyles as an independent consultant for Pure Haven. Pure Haven is a U.S. based company dedicated to providing 100% non-toxic personal care and home cleaning products. 2. Where is it located? Since I can travel to any location, the business is wherever YOU are! 3. What is your favorite part about our community? My favorite part about our community is the way people (moms especially) rally around one another. It really does take a tribe!! 4. How else do you get involved with the community? Aside from educating families about living toxic free, I enjoy singing at our church. 5. What are the biggest challenges facing parents in our community? Especially for families who are not native to the area, it is challenging to feel “connected” with other families unless you are involved in church or your child attends school. 6. What is your favorite memory or story over the years involving you and your business? My favorite story was when I had a love event at a restaurant and my (very skeptical, incredibly macho) brother stopped in and listened to the entire presentation, let me use his had as an example for the products, after which booked his own event!!! If I can convince more people like him, we would have so many people leading healthier lives!! 7. What advice would you give parents and care givers in our community? Advice i need to remember myself: Time flies, so soak it all in. Snuggle, cuddle, and love them to bits! The dishes and laundry can wait. 8. Do you have any specials, events, or anything else taking place this upcoming year that our parents should know? Every month we have a rotating FREE product and discounted bundles of products! Every host earns FREE products so it is incredibly advantageous to book and host a gathering!

1. Tell us about your business/non profit and how it benefits local families?
Since using essential oils my family has noticed a dramatic change in our health and wellness just by making simple changes in removing chemicals in every day products such as cleaners and using essential oils such as Thieves, lemon, peppermint & lavender (just to name a few) to support our wellness. I love sharing that journey and teaching others how to do the same. 2. Where is it located? All over the US/internet based. I am personally based in Harwich and Eastham. 3. What is your favorite part about our community? I love the support from fellow parents and how so many people work together. I love the small town feel of so many towns on Cape Cod! 4. How else do you get involved with the community? I am a Board Member of Eastham Dog Owners Association which hosts many great events and educational offerings. Also going to events and teaching classes with Essentially Oiled Pets and Essential Oils of Cape Cod. 5. What are the biggest challenges facing parents in our community? Health, wellness and rising costs including housing. 6. What is your favorite memory or story over the years involving you and your business? Just in general the people that I have met in business building and also those who have decided to embrace essential oils in their lives and are loving it. I have met some fabulous people who I am proud to call my friends! 7. What advice would you give parents and care givers in our community? Get involved! It took me quite a while after moving here from NY to become involved in the community, going to events and meeting people, it makes a huge difference! I have met so many great people. 8. Do you have any specials, events, or anything else taking place this upcoming year that our parents should know? Yes! I am teaching at Brooks Library in Harwich a series on essential oils (along with Tracy Lamperti) starting February 26, 2018 and running for 5 weeks. I teach classes online on Facebook at Essentially Oiled Pets on toxin free living and using essential oils with pets. I also teach at Nauset Middle School adult education. Explore Your School Choices: Bridgeview Montessori School
Jessica Germain, Bridgeview Montessori teacher & alumni parent I started worrying about preschool pretty much at conception. Not my own, of course, but my son’s. After all, I was resigning my position as a public elementary school teacher to raise this child. And, in truth, it was my frustration with the stressful, impersonal environment in my current school that first planted the seed of desire to escape and start my own family. It made sense that I wanted things to be different for my child. I deeply wanted him to discover the wonder in the world around him and develop a passion for learning about it. As he began to emerge as a person in his own right, my resolve was strengthened. We had talked so much about inspiring “lifelong learners” in my teacher training, but every day in the classroom all I did was teach to a standardized test that seemed aimed at creating standardized human beings. How could I take this naturally curious child with a mind of his own and put him in that environment? As I began to consider preschool options for this curious child of mine, many independent preschools presented themselves as options, and friends recommended everything from Catholic education to homeschooling. I explored them all, but in the back of my mind there was my mother’s voice. When I was growing up she had always told me that a Montessori education would have been her first choice for me. My father, a traditionalist, was against the idea on principle, so I was off to the mainstream. But my husband, also a traditional person, told me that my Masters in Education qualified me as the family decision maker on this topic. Thus empowered, I forged ahead in my quest for the perfect preschool. Many schools received high recommendations from other moms. A woman I had recently met in our Sandwich Library playgroup had an older son that went to Bridgeview Montessori School in Sagamore. When she spoke about her son’s experience, I knew I had to check it out. I had visited other schools that either felt like extensions of home play or seemed like roads directed towards traditional education. When I visited Bridgeview Montessori School, I was invited to view a Children’s House classroom in action. The moment I saw it, I knew. It felt like we were coming home to a bright, peaceful, welcoming place. This place was about learning. And work. The children were spending their days joyously exploring their work as the classrooms were filled with extraordinary Montessori materials prepared meticulously by trained Montessori teachers. When we observed a classroom at Bridgeview Montessori, we saw materials that were colorful and engaging, not garish, but carefully maintained and meaningful. Each child was working industriously and seriously in a way that seemed incredible for a group of three or four year olds. My husband said skeptically, “He could never do that.” But I knew. Our son could do that. He craved that kind of purpose and his intellectual curiosity demanded that kind of direction. What wonderful things could he discover if he was surrounded by other children whose mutual curiosity was guided and encouraged by teachers. I was sold. I cancelled all future appointments to visit other schools and never looked back. ![]()
More than a decade later, I still haven’t looked back. Though our now-teenage son has graduated from Bridgeview Montessori School, I can still see its benefits rippling through him every day. He retained his natural curiosity and become a middle school student who challenged himself to learn more outside of the classroom than in. In high school, I still see the ability to manage his time and workload with ease and to set his own internal expectations for excellence. At work and play, he is confident to approach new situations and tackle novel problems with innovative solutions. He learned all of that through the independence and respect afforded him in a Montessori program. We could not have made a better investment in his future than to begin his educational journey at Bridgeview Montessori School.
About the Players As for me, Jessica Germain, I never returned to teaching in the public school. I decided to pursue Montessori training instead and am currently a teacher at Bridgeview Montessori School in the Elementary I (1st - 3rd grade) program. My husband Greg Germain is the General Manager of Accu-Seal Corporation and is proud to be raising an independent, self-confident son. Greg served as President of the Bridgeview Montessori Board for three years from 2013 to 2015. Courtenay Harrington Bailey, my friend who first recommended Bridgeview Montessori, started the popular Dramafun! program in Sandwich and became the Music and Drama teacher at Bridgeview Montessori School. Courtenay and our families remain close friends to this day. Eli Germain is a student at Sturgis Public Charter School in Hyannis. In his spare time, he writes poetry, plays board games, and trains more than 23 hours per week for Cape Cod Swim Club where he holds numerous age group records and is currently ranked in the top 20 nationally for the 200 yard butterfly. His first coach at CCSC, Adrienne Fontes, was also his Fitness teacher at Bridgeview Montessori School. Eli will turn 15 this month. ![]()

1. Tell us about your business/non profit and how it benefits local families?
Edaville Family Theme Park loves to give back to the community in any way that we can. During November and December of 2017, we held a Canned Food Drive. Any park guest who brought in a canned good received 40% off their ticket, and their donation was used to aid “Shane Gives Thanks”, a local food pantry that helps families in need, especially during the holiday season. The same food pantry also aids local students enrolled in the “Peyton Pack Program”, sending weekend meals home with them. We also benefit local families by remaining affordable! We allow outside food to be brought into the park and offer many promotions and discounts throughout the year! 2. Where is it located? Edaville Family Theme Park is located in Carver, MA 3. What is your favorite part about our community? Our favorite part about our community is that they are always willing to help! In October we held a book drive for the children of the Houston Independent School District who were affected by Hurricane Harvey. When called into action to aid people in need, even out of state, over 2,000 children’s books came pouring in! We were blown away by the community’s response to help. It is only because of the community that these fundraisers are so successful. 4. How else do you get involved with the community? Throughout the year, we offer different promotions on specific days to honor members of the community because they do so much for us! As a salute to America’s bravest, all active military personnel including veterans receive free admission to the park on our Military Appreciation Weekends. On First Responder Appreciation Days, EMTs, doctors, nurses, firefighters and police officers are given 50% off full priced admission for helping to keep us safe. Other members of the community that get their own appreciation day discounts include: residents of surrounding towns, teachers, and kids who do well on their report cards and summer reading lists just to name a few! We love to give back as much as we can to thank these hard-working people! 5. What are the biggest challenges facing parents in our community? The biggest challenge facing parents in our community is being able to find places to go and things to do that are fun for the whole family. Edaville Family Theme Park’s goal is to ensure that everyone has a blast, no matter how old you are! We are proud to be a part of so many families’ memories and traditions because there are rides, attractions and events here that people of all ages can enjoy! 6. What is your favorite memory or story over the years involving you and your business? One of Edaville Family Theme Park’s favorite memories comes from a recent feature on Good Morning America in a segment about how amusement parks are welcoming children with autism. We were honored to appear on the show but even happier that we can offer autism friendly accommodations to embrace all families. We want everyone to feel included at Edaville!
7. What advice would you give parents and care givers in our community?
If Edaville Family Theme Park could give advice to parents and caregivers, it would be to create experiences and make memories with your children. Family togetherness has always been important to us, and there’s no better way to both teach your children and learn from them than spending time together! 8. How does WE CAN benefit local families?
WE CAN is dedicated to empowering Cape women through our practical and unique services. We offer legal, financial, work support, mentoring, personal development, group support, and business growth services. WE CAN services are free and childcare reimbursement is available while women attend WE CAN programs in a wide range of Cape locations. Where is WE CAN located? WE CAN is located in Harwich Port and additionally offers our 1:1 services in Falmouth (at Falmouth Service Center) and Hyannis (at Cape Cod Child Development) through collaborations in the community served, as well as workshops in various Cape locations. What is WE CAN's favorite part of the community? WE CAN loves the special "sense of community" on the Upper Cape - a feeling that members have of belonging, a feeling that members matter to one another and to the group, and a shared belief that members' needs will be met through their shared commitment. How does WE CAN get involved? WE CAN offers both 1:1 appointments and workshops on the Upper Cape. Our PathMaker Mentoring Program operates from September through June at the Museums on the Green in Falmouth. Women are partnered with a mentor, they meet individually and as a group, attend a monthly personal development workshop, and set their own agenda as to what they plan to accomplish during their unique, supported experience. 1:1 monthly sessions include Financial Empowerment, Work Support, and Legal Consults. GROW is for women business owners who wish to grow their business and is hosted in Hyannis. There is an array of workshops offered Cape-wide. WE CAN also offers volunteer opportunities, including the Upper Cape Ambassador Program. What are the biggest challenges of parents today? Parents are very busy and need targeted, on-point services. WE CAN strives to provide practical tools which support independence in families working and living on Cape Cod. A favorite WE CAN story? One WE CAN PathMaker Program graduate from the Upper Cape, June, had begun a fashion business when she learned that her daughter had a medical issue that would require more attention over the next few years. Instead of putting the clothing design business on hold, she transitioned to create an accessories brand and business. This allowed her to care for her daughter, continue to be creative, and build a successful business. "Because of my experience at WE CAN, it wasn't a question of if I could. WE CAN helped me gain confidence that I didn't even know I was lacking." What advice would WE CAN give parents on the Upper Cape? Reach out to WE CAN to learn more about our offerings. What advice would you give parents and care givers in our community? Trust your instincts!!! You are the expert on your child, and your intuition is incredibly valuable. Self-care is incredibly valuable. Time away to take care of yourself, is beneficial to your entire family. Do not neglect your own needs! You, and your family deserve a happy, healthy, and present parent. TOP 10 ITEMS YOU NEED WHEN PREPARING FOR NEW BABY By: Britt I dream of inventing something baby related. First time parents are the best marketing audience ever. You can convince a nervous pregnant woman to buy anything to try and prepare and control a situation that is so far beyond your control. Don’t get me started on Sophie Le Giraffe. $24.99 for a teething toy. Knock it off. That giraffe thinks she is fancy and I don’t like it. ![]() “You NEED to get your baby this!” Says the overly excited Mom at brunch. No. You could spend half that on a less ridiculously overpriced teething ring and give the other half to foster care programs. Did you know those babies are born with nothing at all? Not even a competent human to hold them. “Your baby will LOVE this teething toy.” Said someone in a flowered dress at a baby shower. Your baby would also be happy as a pig in shit to play with a red solo cup. “It’s such an adorable thing for them to suck on.” Said your Nana. That's what she said. Do things have to be adorable to suck and jab around in your mouth? Cause it could be setting false expectations for when they grow up one day and find out what a penis looks like. I wanted to toss my two cents in on what new parents REALLY need when preparing for baby.My list is a little different than you would find on the Babies R Us Website. Because truth be told, some of the most important things you will need can not be purchased.
Write down 3 people you could talk to on the phone that wouldn’t be freaked out when you starting hard crying into the phone. Doesn’t matter if it’s a spouse, friend, teacher, neighbor, who ever it is for you! Just know that at some point you will need some help. You will need loving words and reassurance. Don’t worry, it happens to us all. Ugly crying in your car uncontrollably is practically a rite of passage into motherhood. DOn't worry about it. Let it all out. Then regroup. 2. Amazon prime wipes deliveryI clean my leather couch with baby wipes. I wash my floor with baby wipes. I scrub my kids with baby wipes. I wipe food off my cabinets when my friends aren’t looking with baby wipes. Just keep ‘em coming… It ends up being the cheapest way to purchase them. They are discounted because you sign up for a monthly delivery. You will need them. Poop everywhere. 3. Blue tooth noise cancelling headphones.OMG my family gives me life. I would never want to noise cancel them out. Okay sure. Wait 3 years and then talk to me. 4. At home hobbies.Your kids will get sick. Snow will lock you inside. Kids need to nap. At some point or another you will feel like you are being held hostage at your own home. Think about ways to make your life fun at your own home. Could you work out at home? Do you have some books you can read? Art area. Meditation station. Punching bag. You will spend more time at your house then you did before. Holding down the fort. Make sure that doesn’t mean you don’t still get to learn, do, grow, listen to, extinguish anger, or whatever else refills your cup. 5. A best friend who is NOT your spouse.“Getting married to my BEST friend” says all my Facebook friends. Hmm.. that’s all well and good. But my husband isn’t my best friend. He is my life partner, my #1, my protector, my love, my home. I get emotional just thinking of things to list in that sentence. I love that guy. Yet he is not my best friend. Because if he was my best friend, who would I call to say, “I’m going to fucking kill him.” to? My sister. That’s my best friend. Cause I fell in love i’m suppose to just abandon the person I shared bunk beds with in the 90s? No thank you. ![]() 6. A cold mist humidifier Have that on deck somewhere in your bathroom closet. One night your baby will be sick. You will be thankful for any type of help you can give to your sick baby. Too little for cold meds. Waiting for a virus to pass. Any type of congestion relief will make for a happier tiny human. 7. KnowledgeYou are about to bring a human into the world. Do you want to do a good job? If answer is “no” Please take your hand and slap yourself in the face. If answer is “yes”. Then learn about stuff that will make you a better parent. Know CPR. Read about your childbirth options. You are going to be in some crazy situations once you become a parents and guess what? You are always in charge now. So remember, there is no reason to go crazy and read every book about babies. But get interested in topics that can help you be a better parent. There is just so much information available and you wouldn’t even have to leave your couch. Mine as well check it out. Lastly, know that things like postpartum depression exist. Sometimes I wonder if we don’t talk about that to pregnant women because we don’t want to scare them. You don’t want the glowing pregnant Mom to have to perseverate on the idea that this baby could show up and that might mess with your hormones so much that you just hold him and cry all day. I get that. I don’t want to worry anyone. Most of them will experience nothing close to that. Yet everyone should also be aware that postpartum is a physical,psychological, and emotional healing process for a woman who has just given birth. It affects everyone differently. Just know that there are so many great resources to help you with anything in the transition into motherhood. Sometimes I like think about all the ladies i'd never met before hugging me in this dingy basement conference room of the hospital as I cried into my sleeping 10lbs two day old baby. Breast feeding support group? How far outside my comfort zone. Yet, what a small beautiful moment of strangers being exactly what I needed. Someone else who understood. That was all I needed. I couldn’t breastfeed him. It was NOT working. Which I NOW know is a huge trigger for postpartum depression. It doesn’t matter if intellectually knew that this wasn’t a huge deal. He would take formula. He would be fine. This weird emotional postpartum Mom side of me left me empty with the feeling that I couldn’t feed my kid and it was supposed to be the most natural part of motherhood. Good news, it passes. Things continue to change and heal. But the secret to it all is learning how to ask for help. Reaching out to someone. It speeds up the process of putting yourself back together. 8. Journal Write things down. Put the journal next to your bed. Write down funny things your kids said to you that day. Write down their height or weight. Don’t write for two weeks. Write every night. Don’t put pressure on yourself. One sentence. Just write stuff down. I promise future you will look back at it and smile. We live in this 24/7 media crazed tech world and then on top of that being a parent, makes a lot of information fall by the wayside in years down the road. 9. Maxi Pads You will pee your pants during postpartum time. It happened to a friend of mine… 10. Love Your love and attention will develop your child faster than any play mat with 17 zoo animals on it can. Your words, songs, and facial expressions will be the main tool in your baby learning to develop and thrive. The amount of words you say to your baby and sing to your baby will have a direct correlation with how easily they develop language. Your smell will soothe them. ![]() Did you know that if you hold a baby on your chest and breathe really slowly, they will match your breath? You just hold them against your chest and take long slow deep breaths. If they wiggle, just keep breathing slower, longer, deeper. Be patient and you will see the baby match your breath. Do you see? Camp Wingate*Kirkland is a co-ed overnight and day camp for children ages 4-15. Campers design their own summer through our daily choice program that invites camper feedback and input, and a belief that everyone has something special to offer. We believe that when children are part of a kind, supportive and respectful community, they feel free to step out of their comfort-zone and try new things without the fear of failure. W*K is that community. Camper safety and developing life skills are our priorities. 2. Where is it located? Camp Wingate*Kirkland is located in Yarmouth Port, privately situated on Elisha’s Pond. 3. What is your favorite part about our community? We love being part of the Cape Cod community. Local folks care for another and always willing to lend a helping hand. 4. How else do you get involved with the community? We are regular contributors to the Yarmouth Food Pantry, Calmer Choice and Big Brothers Big Sisters of Cape Cod. We are also supporters of town rec programs and many school fundraisers. 5. What are the biggest challenges facing parents in our community? Parents are constantly faced with the distraction and challenges that cellphones and tablets bring. Feedback from social media make peer pressure harder than when we were kids. This is why we have devoted our summers to being technology free. We believe it is necessary to reconnect kids with the outdoors and activities that keep them unplugged. 6. What is your favorite memory or story over the years involving you and your business? It is a real privilege for us to watch children grow up over the years - to build confidence and skill development. It was be so rewarding to watch campers achieve goals like learning to swim, play the guitar, or challenge themselves in new ways. 7. What advice would you give parents and care givers in our community? Camp is the greatest gift you can give your kid. There is no better experience to allow your child to try new things, make new friends and discover themselves. So many incredible life skills can be acquired at Camp. 8. Do you have any specials, events, or anything else taking place this upcoming year that our parents should know? We have started enrollment for the 2018 season. Lots of great things in store for all of our campers! We give tours year round, call and make an appointment to come see us!

1. Tell us about your business/non profit and how it benefits local families?
Meryl's Music is all about families! Families making music together. Using the Music Together program we help children gain basic music competence (BMC) through experiential learning. Also, music learning supports all types of learning as well! Cognitive, physical, social and emotional learning all are encompassed in music learning. 2. Where is it located? We have locations in Eastham, Harwich, Sandwich, Pocasset and Plymouth 3. What is your favorite part about our community? I moved to the Cape in 2000 to start my family hear. I love the "small town" feeling of the Cape and I love the sense of community we have here. 4. How else do you get involved with the community? I love to go into local daycares, preschools and elementary schools to make music with the kids who might not otherwise have that opportunity. 5. What are the biggest challenges facing parents in our community? A lot of parents living on the Cape don't have family nearby to help with the children so families here tend to feel more isolated until they find a group to join or a program to take with thier child where they can meet other families in the same boat 6. What is your favorite memory or story over the years involving you and your business? I absolutely love watching children grow in my classes from tiny sleeping baby to full on toddler to preschooler and to watch their musicality grow as well. Hearing that one child who never does anything in class but watch (doesn't play the instruments or dance, etc) finaly start to sing out, or show off his dance moves in front of everyone. Those are my favorite moments in my classes. 7. What advice would you give parents and care givers in our community? Get involved! 8. Do you have any specials, events, or anything else taking place this upcoming year that our parents should know? This year, Meryl's Music is celebrating 15 years of bringing the Joy of Family Music to hundreds of families on Cape Cod. Keep your eyes out for a special party sometime this year to celebrate!
