Halloween Activities on Cape Cod and Off By: Molly  My kids love Halloween and all the activities that happen around it. Here is a list of some things to do on and off Cape Cod. Museum of Science Haunted Halls 10/29 and 10/30 9am-5pm All the features you love about the Museum will be here, but with a Halloween-themed twist! This event is free with Exhibit Halls admission. We host our Trunk or Treat at the Wellfleet Drive-In and Cinemas in Wellfleet. We line up vehicles in the wooded parking area where families can bring kids to trick or treat from trunk to trunk. Fall is my favorite time of year and it starts this week! As the temperature cools off and the leaves begin to drop, I get excited about picking apples, pumpkins and other fall harvests. I start planning all my fun meals that I can incorporate all the delicious foods in. I get my camera ready to take lots of fun family photos for when we go exploring the fields together, picking just the perfect pumpkin or the shiniest apple. I also love the opportunity to engage in some fun, simple, low cost family activities that will leave lasting memories with my children.
Below we have compiled a list of apple and/or pumpkin picking farms which have been recommended to us by other Cape Cod Moms as well as a few places where you can just enjoy some fall fun. Some are on Cape Cod, some are close and some require some driving. Do you have any other spots that you recommend that we may have missed? Here are the costs you can expect up to birth and during the first year:
Note: For a second or third child, you will spend much less on furniture, clothing, and toys, but health care, child care, and food will remain the same.
Hospital Costs
According to the Transforming Maternity Care Partnership, in 2011, an uneventful hospital delivery, on average, in the United States cost between $10,657 (vaginal birth, no complications) and $23,923 (cesarean section birth with complications). The actual costs you pay, of course, vary depending on your health care coverage.
Baby Supplies and Equipment
Before you bring the baby home, you'll buy a crib, a changing table, and a swing or bouncy seat. The moderately priced versions of these three things will cost you about $1,200. You'll also need at least one stroller that you can expect to pay about $400 for. A full-size infant car seat will cost you about $150-$200, and a full-size high chair will cost $150. Finally, you will spend several hundred dollars on washcloths, sheets, blankets, towels, undershirts, onesies, and other baby clothes. Also, think about whether you plan to use a diaper service, cloth diapers, or use disposable ones.
Feeding and Diapers
The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends exclusively breastfeeding your baby for at least 6 months. Many women, of course, choose to breastfeed longer than that. Nursing mothers will have to invest in several good nursing bras and nursing pads (about $50) as well as a nursing pillow (about $25). If you plan to return to work after 3 months, consider investing in a hospital-grade breast pump, which will run you about $400. In comparison, a year's worth of ready mix powder formula costs about $1,350. If you buy the ready-to-serve type of formula the cost, is even more, running well over $2,000. You'll also need a year's supply of bottles, at about $90, and you'll have to add another $40 to replace the nipples at least twice in a year. When your baby is ready for solid foods, you will also need to account for the cost of rice cereal and baby food. Diapers are another expense you need to consider. Cloth diapers are the least expensive option. Disposable diaper costs for the first year run about $850, and a diaper genie costs about $40.
Child Care
Child care expenses vary widely. Child care in a day care center costs much less than a live-in nanny (unless you have multiples, then a nanny or au pair is the less expensive option), and prices for daycare centers vary widely. Child care in a day care center costs much less than a live-in nanny. A mid-priced day care center charges on average $975 per month for your infant's care, or close to $12,000 per year.
Health Care
Your infant will visit the doctor about six times during his or her first year, including well-baby check-ups as well as the inevitable colds and fevers of infancy. How much you will spend for doctor visits during the first year depends on your health insurance.
Toys and Clothes
You will spend about $500-$600 on toys and clothing during the first year (in addition to what you bought for the layette.)
Total for the First Year
Your total expenses for the first year run about $15,000-$18,000. The biggest variable is the cost of health care.

On Saturday after enjoying a quiet morning at the beach we decided to go to the Salt Pond Visitors Center. The Salt Pond Visitor Center is located at 50 Nauset Road, at the corner of Nauset Road and Route 6 in Eastham. Hours: daily 9:00 am to 4:30 pm. Phone: (508) 255 - 3421. Inside the visitors center is a small theater that shows 5 different movies about the area and history, a gift shop, three small exhibits: one about piping plover, one a tide pool tank and the last about becoming a junior rangers with sea artifacts to touch, a large exhibit on Wampanoag culture and history where a partial wetu can be seen and of course maps and park rangers to answer questions.
When we arrived at the large parking lot there was plenty of parking. We head right off on our walk with the promise of a movie at the visitors center afterwards. The walk started by walking by the amphitheater down to Buttonbush Trail. Buttonbush Trail is only a .25 m walk that has a rope and braille signs for the blind as well as multi-sensory activities along the way like catch something in a net that is chained to the boardwalk. On Buttonbush Trail my kids spotted a frog, huge green grasshopper and lots of red dragonflies. When we reached the top of the trail instead of heading back we continued on The Nauset Marsh Trail a 1.5 mile loop. Which allowed us to see more insects, plants, rodent holes, the remnants of farms and an old golf course (a roller can still be seen lying in the marsh) as well as Salt pond. The kids made the 1.5 mile walk with minimal complaining and enjoyed exploring and observing nature. Once back at the visitors center we discover the movies were not playing due to a projector issue. The kids took it well and enjoyed looking at the tide pool tank and looking at the books and stuffed animals in the gift shop.
If you and your kids enjoy nature walks I highly recommend the Salt Pond Visitors Center and Nauset Marsh Trail! It is a great free activity.

As I sit on the beach on this beautiful beach day I wish summer was not coming to an end. The kids are happily playing with their beach friends without a care in the world. I am sitting in my chair enjoying the gentle breeze and late afternoon sun (the only thing missing is a glass of wine). This is how my families Staycation began. My husband was able to take off a little over a week leading up to Labor Day this year.
We started our Staycation by spending the first few days at the beach. As Summer Vacation draws to a close less beach friends are at the beach each day and we wanted to make sure the kids enjoyed the last few beach days with their friends. Sitting by the bay basking in the late Summer sun was a great way to start vacation.
On Tuesday we had some friends other and hung out at the beach again.
Labor Day Weekend has arrived and the streets and beaches are busier now. We decide to have a low key rest of vacation with some quiet beach days and friends for a cookout. What a great way to end our vacation.
