Almond Butter Kisses Cookie Recipe

Christmas cookie baking day is one of my favorite parts of the holidays. I love the smell of cookies baking all day long with holiday music playing and the entire family and our friends working together to make some tasty treats!

Peanut butter kisses were always one of my favorites to make with my parents and grandparents growing up along with my grandmother's M&M Christmas cookies. After my son was born we found out he was severely allergic to peanuts which came as a total shock. I have been a major peanut butter love my whole life and I had to remove it completely from our home. Lucky for us he is not allergic to tree nuts so we are able to substitute almond butter and other choices. A few years ago I took the recipe for Peanut Butter Kisses and substituted almond butter and them came out amazing. My son who refuses all kinds of "butter" substitutes enjoys these cookies and I catch him trying to sneak them all the time just like I did as a child! Plus they are pretty darn close to the original peanut butter ones, to the point that I have actually grown to enjoy this option more. Feel free to substitute any other type of "butter" option that will work for your family. These make perfect gifts for teachers, friends and family and they were featured on a Cape Kids Cast where Ethan touts them as a great peanut free option.

Ingredients

1 and 1/4 cup of flour
1 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup brown sugar
1 tsp vanilla

1/2 cup almond butter (feel free to sub in whatever works for your family: peanut butter, sun butter, etc)
1/2 cup shortening
1 egg
2 tbsp milk

Directions

Preheat the oven to 375.
Combine all ingredients and mix until dough forms.
Shape into balls using rounded tablespoon.
Rolls the balls in sugar coating the outside.
Place on an non greased cookie sheet.
Bake for 10-12 minutes.
After removing from oven place a Hershey Kiss in the middle of the cookie.
Allow to cool.
Enjoy!

Christmas M&M Cookies Recipe

Growing up I was always thrilled when the holidays rolled around because it meant that we would be making Christmas cookies!

One of my favorite cookies to make every year was my grandmother's Christmas M&M cookie recipe. I have fond memories of making these both with her and with my parents. Years later my parents gave me a photocopy of her recipe and it brought tears to my eyes to see the recipe written in her handwriting. Every year now I make the same cookies with my kids and even though she never met my children it makes me always feel like she is with me.

These cookies are very addicting and believe me when I tell you that you and the kids will not be able to eat only one. We even featured them on a Cape Kids Cast! So get your mixing bowls out and have the kids get their aprons on, it's time to make some cookie memories for the holidays!

Ingredients

2 & 1/4 cup sifted flour
1 cup shortening
1 cup brown sugar
1/2 sugar
2 tsp vanilla

2 eggs
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp salt
1 & 1/2 cup M&M's

Directions

Preheat the oven to 375.
Mis the flour, baking soda and salt in a bowl.
Mix the shortening & sugars in a bowl in a separate bowl.
Beat in eggs & vanilla.
Gradually add dry ingredient bowl to the wet ingredient bowl.
Stir in 1/2 cup of M&M's.
Drop by spoon (tablespoon) onto baking sheet.
Decorate with remaining M&M's
Bake for 10 minutes and then cool.
Eat & Enjoy!

How do you and/or your business get into the spirit of giving?

I have a small business out of my home in Sagamore Beach, called Kind Hearts and Cupcakes. We are typically always in the spirit of giving. We've learned that a small treat, or a little note with a few kind words, can really brighten someone's day. We love making smiles!

Do you have any specials or events taking place this holiday season?

We will be having our holiday edition of #ProjectKindness on Dec. 20th from 2-6pm. We'll be making cupcakes in 3 flavors, Chocolate Orange, Cookie Dough, and Mint Heaven. Our 6 packs will be on sell for $10 (reg $12) Must be pre-ordered.

What is your favorite thing about this time of year?

My favorite thing about this time of year is enjoying time with loved ones.

Over the years, what is the best example of local kindness you have experienced or seen?

Over the years the best example of kindness I've seen was last year when we lived in UT and someone in our community started "The Giving Train" It started on our community facebook page with a man giving away $100 to a family in need, then it took off with people offering whatever the could; photo sessions, food, gift cards, paintings, services, crocheted hats/gloves, one person even paid a months rent for a family in need. It was amazing how it spread, even those who didn't have much enjoyed giving what they could!

Would you share with us a family tradition?

A couple of our favorite holiday traditions are making gingerbread houses and opening a package on Christmas Eve which typically contain a pair of new pajamas. Sharing a gingerbread house with my family (for several days) would also be my favorite holiday dessert!

What are your words of advice for families during this special time?

I would suggest to families that no matter what differences they may have, spend time with your loved ones as often as possible, because you never know when you might not get to see them again.

Do you have a favorite holiday song? If so, which one and why?

My favorite holiday song is The Christmas Shoes, it gives me chills, because it's what
Christmas is all about.

This week they get crazy about pie discussing their favorites and traveling to a tasty bakery in Falmouth called Pies a La Mode. There they interviewed Jean Rooney, the owner and even made their own apple pies. They also will highlight some upcoming events.

Next week we will feature a Nutcracker special and later in the month a special interview with local teens from an Interact club of Rotary.
