The Lego Dilemma

My three and five year old kids love Legos. I actually love Legos too but not when they are all over the floor. Stepping on Lego can be very painful. We live in a small space so Legos are good because when cleaned up don’t take up much space but it also means we don’t have a space that can be used just for Lego play out of the way… Today I hit a breaking point with my son’s Legos being everywhere and him not cleaning them up (over the last several weeks we have talked, modeled and given ideas how to making cleaning up easier) so he has lost most of his Legos until he can show me he can take care of them. While he needs to really work on being a better listener and cleaner I need to find a better system for organizing his Legos.
Here is what I have now:

A set of drawers in the hall to keep Lego people and pieces.

A bookshelf in the hall to keep bigger Buckets of built Legos and really big
built sets right on top.

The small table/corner where my son is suppose to keep the his Legos
contained in when playing.

How do you keep your kids Legos under control and get them to clean them up? Any suggestions or ideas for my space?

Cape Cod Kids and Moms LOVE building with Lego's and bricks! And once again there will be an awesome Lego Brick show in Massachusetts! We have attended similar events before, but BrickFair this year promises to be even bigger and better than all others, plus is only $12 (we also have a discount code available)! BrickFair will be held at the May 21-22, 2016 at the Royal Plaza Trade Center in Marlborough, MA. Do you want to be SuperMom and SuperDad? Bring your kids to BrickFair LEGO Fan Expo! There will be endless LEGO creativity and inspiration, games, moon bounces, shopping,Derby Racing, Bingo, and more!

At the New England show coming up, they’re expecting ~130 exhibitors showing off their best creations, and ~7,000 public visitors. They will have 13 vendors covering 45 tables of LEGO goodies for sale including discontinued sets, hard to find pieces, custom molded, custom engraved and custom printed LEGO minifigs and parts, and really just about anything you never imagined (want a LEGO bow tie?). They will have a moon bounce (or two), Bingo with LEGO prizes, hands-on Stay & Play area, Guesstimate jars full of LEGO pieces, Ring Toss and Go Fish carnival midway style games, and of course lots of awesome models to show off. Be inspired, awed, amazed, impressed and maybe intimidated by models displayed. Oh yeah, they will also have the world’s largest LEGO battleship, built by Dan Siskind of Brickmania (wildly popular purveyor of custom molded WWII weapons).

Brickfest LIVE in Boston Proves to Be Fun & Educational

The Tiny One is currently obsessed with all things Lego, so we were thrilled when we were offered an opportunity to attend the Brickfest Live event in Marlborough this year. Although the drive was long, it was totally worth every second to be able to see the excitement on the Tiny One’s face at all the Legos.

When we walked in, right away we noticed the castle display and the giant Toy Story Woody all created with Legos. There were several areas that we focused on right away. Our first stop after pictures was the “Contribute to Our City” station. The three of us quickly got to work trying to create something that would help enhance the city. We made a small plane, a yellow submarine and a futuristic white house.

After adding our engineering marvels, we noticed a pretty awesome race track and headed straight for it. Participants were given five minutes to create a fast car using a pre-constructed base. The Tiny One got busy creating a speedy car. After the time was up we went into the track area. There were three tracks set up with six cars each. The Tiny One had cleverly realized that he needed to place all the weight on the back of the race car for it to keep the speed during the straightaway sprint to the finish. He was overjoyed when he won first place!

We also spent some time at mini golf course. Personally, I would have liked to have seen a little more effort on this area. The outside of the golf boxes were framed with Legos, but I really felt they could have gone a step farther and made actual Lego obstacles within each section.

For the tiniest brick fans, there was a Duplo area as well as a giant red brick pit filled with only red bricks! We were amazed by the creativity and engineering taking place! There was also a gaming area for the older kids with several Lego video games. And, they even had a quiet area for reading and resting, complete with books including “how-to” building books.

We checked out the wall mosaic area which consisted of tiny one-piece bricks that participants placed on a small square. There were some pretty amazing pieces done by prior participants. We added ours (a green Cape Cod “arm” surrounded by blue “ocean”) to the mix and the Tiny One could not have been more excited. After that we immediately had to check out the awesome glow-in-the-dark Lego display, which the Tiny One found extremely interesting!

We saved perusing the vendor tables for last, which was a great way to help manage a 4-year-old’s behavior. The vendors had everything from brick bows to wear in your hair or on your shirt to a “build your own” Lego figure station. They had “build a clone” stations, figurines, complete sets (definitely cheaper than in the store), and seriously, we actually saw a “Star Wars Slave I” ship (Boba Fett’s Starship)!

Cape Cod Moms TIPS FOR YOUR VISIT

◦ You can find a Brick Fest Live event near you on their website. They run all summer!

◦ This event has some things for younger Lego fans (3 and under) but preschoolers, as well as kiddos in middle school and above would have the most fun (we adults had a blast!)

◦ They do have one food station but it is limited. We suggest packing snacks and drinks and then planning to eat on the way home.

◦ Use your imagination and have fun!
