Cape Cod Parent Resource Fair Spotlight: Meryl's Music & Arts Centers

With the Cape Cod Parent Resource Fair rapidly approaching we will be sharing blog posts on our participating sponsors, vendors and nonprofits. You will find out more about these amazing businesses and what they offer to our community. They will be sharing their services, advice, what challenges face our community as well as upcoming events they will be having. Make sure to check out our virtual program and resource guide ahead of the event so you can plan for what you want to see! We hope to see you at the Resource Fair!

The 1st Cape Cod Parents Resource Fair will be held on Saturday, February 3, 2018 from 10:00 AM – 2:00 PM at The Waldorf School of Cape Cod.

All parents, caregivers and children will enjoy this educational and fun resource fair. Attendees can connect with local family-friendly nonprofit organizations, resource providers and businesses that are dedicated to helping families in our community grow and prosper. The event will feature informative parent-focused sessions for adults led by area professionals along with fun and engaging entertainment for the whole family including music, art, yoga and even a puppet show!

Meryl's Music & Arts Centers

1.  Tell us about your business/non profit and how it benefits local families?
Meryl's Music is all about families! Families making music together. Using the Music Together program we help children gain basic music competence (BMC) through experiential learning. Also, music learning supports all types of learning as well! Cognitive, physical, social and emotional learning all are encompassed in music learning.

2. Where is it located?
We have locations in Eastham, Harwich, Sandwich, Pocasset and Plymouth

3. What is your favorite part about our community?
I moved to the Cape in 2000 to start my family hear. I love the "small town" feeling of the Cape and I love the sense of community we have here.

4. How else do you get involved with the community?
I love to go into local daycares, preschools and elementary schools to make music with the kids who might not otherwise have that opportunity.

5. What are the biggest challenges facing parents in our community?
A lot of parents living on the Cape don't have family nearby to help with the children so families here tend to feel more isolated until they find a group to join or a program to take with thier child where they can meet other families in the same boat

6. What is your favorite memory or story over the years involving you and your business?
I absolutely love watching children grow in my classes from tiny sleeping baby to full on toddler to preschooler and to watch their musicality grow as well. Hearing that one child who never does anything in class but watch (doesn't play the instruments or dance, etc) finaly start to sing out, or show off his dance moves in front of everyone. Those are my favorite moments in my classes.

7. What advice would you give parents and care givers in our community?
Get involved!

8. Do you have any specials, events, or anything else taking place this upcoming year that our parents should know?
This year, Meryl's Music is celebrating 15 years of bringing the Joy of Family Music to hundreds of families on Cape Cod. Keep your eyes out for a special party sometime this year to celebrate!

The Coalition for Children,
Falmouth's CFCE (Coordinated Family and Community Engagement) Grant

1.  Tell us about your business/non profit and how it benefits local families?
The Coalition for Children is a parent education and support program. We offer Play & Learn groups, workshops, parenting classes, and developmental screenings for families with children birth to school age.

2. Where is it located?
My office is in Falmouth, MA, but we serve all families: everyone is welcome!

3.  What is your favorite part about our community?
Falmouth is a caring community, with lots of programs to support our community members - young and old. From free, family programs like the Coalition for Children, to our local food pantry, the Falmouth Service Center - Falmouth offers a lot of opportunity to get involved, to stay connected, and to offer and receive support in times of need.

4.  How else do you get involved with the community?
The Coalition is connected to the Falmouth Public Schools, the center based and family Early Childhood Providers, the Falmouth Service Center, and Falmouth Human Services. By knowing the ins and outs of our community resources, we are able to offer a warm hand-off to families when they are looking for information or help.

5. What are the biggest challenges facing parents in our community?
Childcare is very expensive, which makes it very difficult for working families. We are very lucky that Falmouth has over 20 childcare centers and 20 family childcare providers, but we still need more care, especially for children birth to 2 years 9 months.

6. What is your favorite memory or story over the years involving you and your business?
We've been offering free parenting classes for over 15 years, and when parents or grandparents tell us that a lesson, a strategy, or a point made in class made a huge difference in the lives of their family - that is very rewarding.

We offer free Play & Learn groups - from Lap Babies to our Intergenerational Music and Movement - and families love the opportunity to participate in these literacy based, parent-and-child-together activities in our family friendly environment. These opportunities are great for families who live here, and especially helpful to those who are new to the Cape.

7. What advice would you give parents and care givers in our community?
Get connected! Parenting is a joy, but also very challenging. Isolation leads to frustration, stress, and even - at times - child abuse. Getting involved offers a safety net to you and your child(ren).

8. Do you have any specials, events, or anything else taking place this upcoming year that our parents should know?
Yes! We have free Play & Learn groups during the week, weekend activities for parents and children, our once-a-month International Connections program where you can learn about other cultures and families, AND our Multiculteral Fair on April 28th. Drool Baby Expo

This past week I was so excited to see that Magic Beans is going to be hosting a second Drool Baby Expo this year! I have been to Drool twice since it deput in 2011; once in 2012 and again in 2014. The Drool Baby Expo is an event that allows expectant parents, parents, grandparents and people who just love baby products to check out all the newest and greatest products and services all in one place. Each product booth as one to three representatives from the company that will chat with you and demo products as well as make suggestions of what might work best for your family. What I like about this is all the products are right there for you to get your hands on and try out; want to try actually folding or pushing that stroller you can, not sure that the car seat you saw advertised online really simplifies installation try it out.

The second Drool Baby Expo of 2017 will take place September, 14 from 3pm-9pm at the Westin Waterfront Hotel in Boston. Tickets are now on sale now and there are options for every price range. The least expensive option (the early bird pricing) starts at $10 for Value Ticket just gets you into the event (great for spouse/family/friend), $20 gets you a Standard Ticket which includes one drink ticket and raffle opportunities, $30 for Couples Standard Ticket (one standard ticket and one value ticket), for $45 you get a Premium Ticket which includes a gift bag, raffle opportunities and two drink tickets for $10 more you can get a couples ticket, then for $100 ($10 more for couples) you get a Single VIP Ticket which includes a super deluxe gift bag with over $200 in products and services a gift card to Magic Beans, raffle opportunities and two drink tickets. The exhibitors that I am most looking forward to checking out include Ergo, Britax, Bob, Thule, Uppababy, LuLaRoe, Astlen and Bugaboo. At the event you have the opportunity to purchase all the products or order them at the on-site Magic Beans Pop-up Shop. most with discounts or special deals (you do not actually have to take the products that night).

The VIP and Premium tickets do sell out quickly so if you want them order soon! If you plan on going I recommend getting there early as it does get crowd as afternoon turns to evening. I am looking forward to attending and checking out all the new products without my kids (kids are not prohibited but they make it hard to check products out and the venue is not really child friendly for toddler and up; babies in carriers would be fine).

Have you been to Drool? Might you go this year? 

Molly, her husband, and their 4 and 6 year split their time between their little piece of the cape in Orleans and Cambridge. She was a kindergarten teacher before her oldest was born then became a SAHM. She loves running, books, supporting literacy, nature walks, arts, craft, knitting and sewing as well as being outside and on the beach!
