Fall Harvest Festival at the Cape Cod Fairgrounds Saturday, September 22 and Sunday, September 23. Rte 151, East Falmouth, MA/Free Parking

Come browse our extensive arts and crafts marketplace. Give the kids a thrill on our amusement rides. Check out all the farm animals, and our horse show. Take in our agricultural exhibits. Don’t miss our pony rides and trolley hayrides. And of course, enjoy seasonal treats!

The gates open each day at 10am and the fun lasts all day until 4pm. The Harvest Festival - it’s everything you love about fall in one place! 

The Harvest Festival will also be the host to the 6th Annual Cape Cod Comedy Festival on Saturday night! Doors open at 5 and the laughs starts at 7PM! A portion of each ticket sale is donated to the Barnstable County Agricultural Society, Inc. Cape Cod Cranberry Day Saturday, September 29, 2018 - 11:00am to 4:00pm
Green Briar Nature Center and Jam Kitchen, 6 Discovery Hill Road (off Route 6A), East Sandwich, MA 02537 Green Briar celebrates this native cranberry so prominent in the history of Cape Cod.  See cooking demonstrations in the historic Jam Kitchen using traditional cranberry recipes.  Enjoy a homemade cranberry dessert for a $5 fee served from 11am-4pm.  Tour a neighboring cranberry bog at 11am and 1:15pm.  Listen to "A Frog in the Bog" story time at 12pm.  View the gallery exhibit featuring the life and works of children's author/naturalist Thornton W. An avid volunteer with 14 years of experience working with the American Cancer Society, as well as several other organizations, she has a background in business management but left behind her career after deciding self employment was a better fit for family life and a good work/life balance. ​​

Falling Out of Summer

Inevitably, most of us are eagerly anticipating fall and all the joys it brings by these last weeks of summer. We are ready for less traffic, kids back to school (if they go), cooler weather, and fun fall activities. We are compiling a list of the closest harvest favorites that will be posted here soon. Many will be off Cape, but are worth the drive! If you have an activity or a place to recommend, reach out to us so we can make sure it gets on the list!

We wish you all a happy Labor Day weekend and first week back to school! In case you are eager to get your fall baking going, below is a delicious pumpkin cranberry muffin recipe our family loves. Hope you enjoy trying it too!

Ingredients:
1.5 cups cooked pumpkin puree (or canned pumpkin)
2 eggs
1/4 cup oil or applesauce
1/4 cup molasses
1/4 cup orange juice
3 tsp ginger root grated (or 2 tsp ginger spice)
2 cups all purpose flour
1/4 cup brown sugar
2/3 cup granulated sugar
1.25 tsp baking powder
3/4 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp salt
1 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp nutmeg
1 tsp ground cloves
3/4 cup dried cranberries (or fresh crushed/finely diced)

1. Mix all dry ingredients together EXCEPT brown sugar
2. Mix all wet ingredients together
3. Combine them, adding small amounts of the dry ingredients into the wet to incorporate
4. Do not overmix!
5. Mix together brown sugar and cranberries
6. Fold in cranberry mixture (you can add walnuts, raisins, pumpkin seeds, ect too!)
7. Spoon into muffin liners/tins
8. Bake at 375 for 20-25 minutes or until toothpick comes out clean.

End of Summer Blues

Are you or your kids not ready for summer to end? The good news is that it doesn’t have to (just yet!). On the Cape we get the most wonderful fall season to enjoy anything we were too busy for or unable to do during the heat of the summer. So if you are feeling down that you didn’t get to do everything on your list before the cooler weather sets in, take five minutes and make an end of summer bucket list!

We made one at the beginning of the summer and got through most of it, but still have some items to check off. I decided we’d take this heatwave as a reminder that summer is still here and we can still finish up some of the activities we didn’t get around to! Grab a pen and paper and sit down with your kids to see if there is anything they want to do before the summer is really over. Mini golf? Ice cream date? Walking the flats at low tide? Collecting and painting shells? Come up with some ideas and pull together a last hoorah! 👙🏄‍♂️🎳

BARNSTABLE

This is the 3rd Annual community event for all. Wear your costumes and join the parade around the County Court House complex. Pumpkin Festival Open House

Stine, and making some monster bookmarks. Library staff will also provide monster blood punch and snacks to get us in the spirit. It's sure to be a hair-raising good time! The movie we will be watching is rated PG. Run time is 103 minutes.  This event will take place on Saturday, October 21 at 2 PM. Admission is free.

Come celebrate Halloween at the Brewster Ladies’ Library! All ages are invited. Wear your costume! We will have a Halloween parade, walk over to the Brewster Store, stop for songs with Cathy Hatch, and then head to Kinlin Grover Real Estate for snacks. This event will take place on Friday, October 27, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. at the Brewster Ladies’ Library. The creative and innovative Pumpkin People are fashioned by local businesses, organizations or just plain folk. They are on display from October 13 until Halloween! These larger-than-life creations are just the frost on the pumpkin the day of the Oktoberfest festival. Come and see these outrageous displays in October and plan to be at the Oktoberfest in Chatham.

Trunk or Treat is a safe, fun, free community Halloween Festival for the whole family.
 Last year, nearly 5,000 people enjoyed the carnival-like atmosphere, which included bounce houses, face painting, refreshments, and of course, lots of free candy!
 At the center of Trunk or Treat are the 50 themed and decorated cars (the "Trunk" in Trunk or Treat) where children receive free candy.  This year's theme for cars is "superheroes"!

This resource was established in honor of Angela, a 2008 graduate of Cape Cod Tech's Graphic Arts Department, after her passing in 2009. The award is available to a deserving Graphic Arts student pursuing higher education upon graduation. Angela was an artist and a photographer. Every year we have some of her art work on display, and some of her original photographs and hand-designed bookmarks for sale. Angela wrote and produced a children's book entitled "When I Grow Up" for her senior project at CCT, and we also have copies of this available for purchase.

WHERE: The Cranberry Harvest Celebration is a great way to see and learn about the picturesque cranberry harvest while enjoying some old fashioned family fun. Watch as we harvest the crimson berries continuously each day. You can even put on a pair of waders and step into a corral of berries!
Visit educational and historical displays, view the spectacular landscape and harvest by taking a helicopter ride, enjoy live cooking demonstrations by some of the area’s finest chefs and culinary professionals, shop the marketplace with over 40 juried exhibitors from around the region, listen to local musicians, and peruse the farmers' market and food concession areas for the best fare around. 
Children’s activities include pony, paddle boat, train, live entertainment, wagon rides and much more.
The event is held rain or shine. No pets are allowed. Last bus to the cranberry bog departs at 3:30 p.m.

Merchants and merry makers, acrobats and arrows, dragons and daredevils, faeries and fun - there is so much to see and do at King Richard's Faire! During the glorious weather last weekend, my family piled into the car and made the drive (less than an hour from the Lower Cape) to Carver to spend the day feasting, exploring, eating, drinking, cheering, jeering, and having an amazing time in the kingdom of Carvershire. 

There is an amazing array of vendors selling unique, handmade items that can rarely be found outside of a Renaissance Faire. So many fantastic choices can be overwhelming so before we even leave the car in the parking lot we go over our limits with the girls. Every year they are able to choose one souvenir (often they wait to pick at the very end of the day after seeing so many choices)  and three rides/games each. This ensures that we have a good time while staying budget conscious, we've found that giving the girls these very clear guidelines before we even enter and then reminding them throughout our visit really cut down on the whining and asking for more, more, more. Though we do ALWAYS want more when we are there, it truly feels like we are in another world. 

There are so many fun rides and games to participate in. They all work only by man-power and gravity and are often historically accurate. It's fun to see the creativity that was used to build exciting, fun rides even so many centuries ago!

The performers were amazing and the jousts exciting! This year my big girl got the chance to make music with two of the performers. It made her whole day! The entire cast does a fantastic job of interacting with visitors and bringing them into this alternative reality. It's clear why our visits fuel my children's imagination throughout the year and they wait with anticipation for our yearly visit!

This year we ran into friends at the Faire and the first thing my little one said was "I wish we could live at the Faire!" I love that they enjoy it so much and allow themselves to slip into this land of make believe. Growing up in a small town which is fairly homogeneous, I feel like it's really important to bring my kiddos to many different types of places, with many different types of people so that they will grow up knowing that there is a place for everyone. Even if you feel like you don't fit in where you are at the moment, just knowing that there is someplace out there where there are people like you can get you through trying times. For me that is the true magic of the Faire!

This weekend, October 22nd and October 23rd, are the final weekend of this year's King Richard's Faire. I hope you go and enjoy it before the Faire closes its gates for the 2016 season. Go forth and be merry mamas!
