Game Night with Calmer Choice

This Wednesday, The Daily Brew in Catumet will be hosting games, laughter, and unlimited fun, all in support of Calmer Choice and their mindfulness programs in participating Cape Cod Schools.

This free event brings families together to celebrate Calmer Choice and maintain authentic connections, all without using a Phone or Tablet!

Join us Wednesday, February 27th from 5-8 pm at The Daily Brew - have a snack and a drink, play board games and card games, and most of all, celebrate our Community.

If you choose to make a $5 donation, you and a friend will be entered into Reboot Game Lab's 2nd "Hungry Hungry Hippo Tournament" - with a chance to lift the coveted Hippo Cup and have your names engraved on its side!

5 Fun, Frugal Activities from the Dollar Tree

It’s August, and my kids have just about a month left of their summer break. We’ve enjoyed plenty of great weather, beach days, and time together! Some of our favorite things to do are simple activities, and one of my favorite places to find fun, frugal activities is the Dollar Tree. Today I’m sharing 5 activities you can find at your local Dollar Tree!

Bubbles

Kids love bubbles, and you can easily pick them up at the Dollar Tree. Yesterday I saw at least 4 different sized and themed bottles of bubbles! They even had a couple multi-packs. Bubbles is a great activity for a wide variety of ages (including adults)!

Activity Books

The amount of activity books at the Dollar Tree is endless. You can find coloring books, mazes, word searches, sticker books, educational activities, and more! These are particularly great for road trips, rainy days, and quiet time.

Baseball Game

If you’re looking to get your young ones moving, grab a plastic bat and ball set! Take it to the beach or park. Better yet, invite your neighbors over for an evening ball game!

Letter writing

You can get a small pack of 8 blank cards (with envelopes) for $1. While you’re at it, buy some pens and stickers, too. Write a letter and decorate it. Write just for fun or send out a letter to someone who could use a little cheering up!

Ice cream Treat

Did you know that many of the Dollar Trees sell Blue Bunny ice cream ? My kids love when they can get an ice cream treat from the Dollar Tree. I’m happy to oblige because you can’t beat the price!

StoryLand Characters Come to Life During Annual Family Vacation

Last year we brought you some great tips for how to make the most out of your visit to Story Land (click here to read again). This year we bring you 3 additional Pro-Tips as well as some interviews with the kids!

During our recent family vacation to North Conway, we ran into several characters at Story Land and because it wasn’t crazy busy we were able to have a little more one on one time getting to know them. I am always amazed at how much the kids love seeing the characters. Check out Ethan's interview with Peter Pan, Tinkerbell, Little Red Riding Hood where he asks them all about how they felt about being in a movie. He then asks Mother Goose later on about her favorite nursery rhymes, what her favorite part of each season is and finds out that Lucy the Goose and StoryLand are celebrating 65 years this year!

We are so incredibly grateful to have had the chance once again to celebrate with our favorite characters at one of our favorite places in New England. 65 years is a long time to make children and families smile and we can't wait for the next 65 years! Going on a Monday before school gets out is a win! Some of the little food vendors and games will be closed and the shows a little more limited. However the rides are less crowded though and we got to go on many of them repeatedly. This was well worth the decision as we rode the Bamboo Shoot so many times I was drenched.
This brings us to our second tip which is to bring a change of clothes after you have thoroughly enjoyed the water rides. Otherwise if it is hot out you may stink by the time you leave for the day.
Lastly spend some time with the characters! As you can see from our interactions and interviews the kids really enjoy it no matter how old they are! The characters all enjoy the interactions especially Mother Goose who over time we have chatted with and found that she does some times make a trip down to Cape Cod to see family!

My kids love Halloween and all the activities that happen around it. Here is a list of some things to do on and off Cape Cod.

Museum of Science Haunted Halls
10/29 and 10/30 9am-5pm
All the features you love about the Museum will be here, but with a Halloween-themed twist! This event is free with Exhibit Halls admission.

Join the National Marine Life Center for our Halloween Open House! Come in costume! Learn about spooky ocean animals! Enjoy arts and crafts and games and refreshments. Wellfleet Trunk or Treat 10/31 4pm-7pm
Trunk or Treat is a fun and safe way for children of all ages to trick or treat on Halloween night. We host our Trunk or Treat at the Wellfleet Drive-In and Cinemas in Wellfleet. We line up vehicles in the wooded parking area where families can bring kids to trick or treat from trunk to trunk. All trunks are decorated and are excited to see all of the local families having a great time on Halloween night.

Green Halloween 10/29 10am-2pm
Wear a costume and join the FUN at the annual CCMNH and Brewster Chamber of Commerce GREEN HALLOWEEN event! No Tricks…All Treats! New this year: The Spooky House PLUS: The Agway Maze, Treat Trail Scavenger Hunt, Pirates Hideaway House and Spider Web Game as well as activity stations with crafts, games, honeybee jamboree, refreshments and more!
$5 Children (3-16: must be accompanied by an adult) Adults with Children are FREE! General Admission for Adults without children.

What's Your Secret Mommy Timeout?

As parents we all have those secret moments when we take a timeout from the family, kids, work etc. These moments don't happen often and I have noticed that now I have to be super creative for where to go for those moments. The kids almost ALWAYS seem to sense you are taking a few mins to yourself and come knocking or barging in.... especially the bathroom!

So in the spirit of it being Friday, I wanted to do something fun today for a blog post! As you can see I'm grabbing 5 mins to read a few page of my amazing book while chugging down my caramel mocha... shhh don't tell the kids! I want to know what your seret mommy timeout is! TOUCH A TRUCK - a West Falmouth Library Fundraiser!

Rev up your childrens imaginations as they explore all kinds of trucks and vehicles on display at the Falmouth High School Parking Lot. There will be fun activities and refreshments for purchasing. Tickets sold at WFL, 8 Cousins, and at the event.

On Saturday, Sept. 24 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the West Falmouth Library will present a Touch A Truck fundraising event held at the Falmouth High School parking lot. The rain date is Sunday, September 25 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Children of all ages are invited to explore a variety of trucks and vehicles such as construction vehicles, safety vehicles and others. There will be fun activities and refreshments will be available for purchase. Kids will be able to decorate a hat and purchase some yummy icecream which will also benefit West Falmouth Library! Several local businesses are providing the trucks and the following local businesses have generously supported this family fun event: Chapman, Cole & Gleason, Clover Paving Company, C.L. Noonan and Mashpee Physical Therapy at Deer Crossing.

Admission price is $5 per family. Tickets are available until Sept. 23 at the library and at Eight Cousins children’s bookstore, 189 Main St., Falmouth. They will also be available at the event but attendees are encouraged to buy their tickets in advance.

Mother Goose on the Loose ~ Fall Session!

Our Fall Session of childrens programming starts on Tue. Sept. 13. MGOL will be held on Tues. & Fri. at both 10:15 & 11:15. Story Boat will be at 10:15 on Tuesdays and Fridays.

Please Note: There will not be any children's programs on Friday, October 7; Friday, November 11; the week of Thanksgiving, Nov. 22 and Nov. 25 and Friday, Dec. 9.

Mother Goose on the Loose is a drop-in program, lead by staff member,
Amy Sellers. This Fall, MGOL will meet 4 times during the week. “Mother Goose on the Loose” is free and open to all area families, pre-registration is not required at this time, however our goal is to have no more than 15 children and their care-givers in one session. Please choose one MGOL session a week to attend. “Mother Goose on the Loose” is a thirty-minute literacy program designed for children from birth to age three and their caregivers. The program was developed by Dr. Betsy Diamant-Cohen, and combines principles of successful library “lapsit” programs and elements from Barbara Cass-Beggs successful music enrichment programs entitled, “Your Baby Needs Music” and “Your Child Needs Music”.

“Mother Goose on the Loose” incorporates findings in child development and brain research with activities and methods that promote early literacy and school readiness skills. Each session follows a script that uses repetition; and tactile, rhyme, rhythm, listening, and movement activities. Typical sessions begin with the poem “Old Mother Goose” followed by finger plays, flannel board activities, puppet shows, stories, songs, movement activities, playing with scarves, bells, and drums, and interactive play. Each session ends with a lullaby, a quiet poem, and a signature good-bye.

The program’s design and implementation carefully considers aspects of brain development in babies and young children. Research shows that the development of intellectual, emotional, and social intelligence in babies and children is most affected by experiences that are frequent, regular and predictable; experiences that occur in the context of a warm and supportive environment; experiences that are associated with positive emotion and play; and experiences that encourage a child’s curiosity and initiative.

Story Boat, a preschool story time for ages 2.9-5 years will be on Tuesdays and Fridays at 10:15 a.m. downstairs in the Sunshine Room. We invite MGOL parents with pre-school aged children to choose the Friday sessions as we offer early literacy programs for both ages. We welcome new staff member, Rosemary Modic who will lead Story Boat. Story Boat provides a developmentally appropriate story time with a craft.
