![]() Holiday Gifts and Giving By Molly I don’t know about you but my kids have plenty of toys, clothes and stuff. Each year in the fall I encourage my kids now 4 and 6 to go through their belongs and find items they no longer want or need. We then donate or give these items to others in need. During this process each year I realize how many things we have (although my kids have much less than some of their friends). And yes both of my kids want lots of toys they don’t have and they will get some Legos, Magna Tiles, Usborne books and maybe a few other things for the holidays but the rest of the gifts will be memberships and experiences. Plus being thankful for how lucky we are not to need anything and have time to spend with family and friends. Below I have compiled a list of the suggestions I have given to family and friends when they ask about what my kids want for gifts. Memberships:

Pley is a toy rental service that I got one free rental credit to try out. The cost ranges from $13-$30 a month depending on toy how many credits you want a month. There is a large selection of toys to rent from Legos to American Girl outfits to games and electronics. Going in I loved the idea of being able to get toys for my kids that would not become clutter later in my house.
When selecting the toy I would have chosen Legos or an American Girl outfit but I was concerned it might get mixed up with all the Legos or doll stuff we already have thus making my life more difficult. I ended up choosing Zuppies Spot which is a plastic dog who you can love, play with, and train because I thought my kids would have fun with it. I was excited when it arrived so I opened it while the kids were in bed to surprise them with in the morning. Well the kids never played with it because I could not get it to work properly or really do anything. After reading the direction a couple times and playing around with the dog I still could not get it to work so I gave up and emailed Pley. After two days Pley got back to me and asked if I had gone through the directions… at which point I said “yes and it still was not working and that I didn’t really want to spend more time on this toy could I return it?” Pley CS said sure return it but didn’t offer to send me a new toy or any other compensation even though the toy didn’t work. Maybe I just chose the wrong toy. According to the website if a piece is missing or broken they just send a new piece out.
I really wanted to like Pley. I think it is a great idea for Legos if your child just likes to build the set and plays some and then is done with it. And if after you rent a toy you just can’t give it up you can buy it at a reduced cost. Maybe I will try Pley again when my kids are older and can really care for the toys themselves.
Want to try Pley use this link then let us know what you think!

As I opened the box the Holly Journal arrived in a wafted of apple spices drifted through the air reminding me of cozy winter times. Inside the box was a welcome card lying on top of the beautiful gold tissue. Under the gold tissue I discovered the Spiced Apple Cider drink mix, an old fashioned peppermint and Scents of the Season potpourri that I smelled. In addition to the seasonal treats and beautiful journal there was a detailed acorn key chain, a bronze and gold marker pen, gift tags, thank you note card, a blank month calendar and November journalling prompts. The journal itself is filled with all these great details such as envelopes to store keepsakes, quotes to inspire and trinkets to get you thinking. I know for me I do not really journal anymore but getting the Holly Journal with ideas is helping with the inspiration to go back to journalling. A Holly Journal would make a great gift especially for mothers/grandmothers this holiday season too!
I was sent this Holly Journal in return for an unbiased blog post review on Holly Journals. Holly Journals is a monthly subscription for “Monthly themed- unique, handmade journals with other coordinating treasures to inspire and encourage your journalling adventures!” and cost $39.95 a month. It should be noted that the November boxes are sold out so can order December journal boxes now. Also Holly Journals will be having a special December box for girls (pre-ordering will be available soon). A "Snow Princess" theme the age range would be from 5-13 years old (with free personalization on cover). I know my six year old daughter would love this.

Okay, so I'll be honest. I wasn't much of a griller until recently, more specifically the summer of 2014. I had been a vegetarian for several years and then gradually went back to eating meat (sort of) though it didn't exactly remain a staple of my diet. Anyhow, I had been asked to review this set of BBQ Grill Tools Set - 3 Piece Utensils kit of grilling tools from Cave Tools in exchange for my honest opinion, so I figured it was as good an excuse as any to fire up the old, clunky (and perfectly functional) two-burner propane dinosaur that occupies a third of my deck throughout all four seasons of the New England year.
I'll be honest again. I was using this set of three tools (a spatula, grilling tongs, and a two-pronged grilling fork) to cook burgers, so I didn't really need the grilling fork for anything. It did, however, have a nice, streamlined design and fit ergonomically into my hand. The sharp, precise design of the fork carried over to the other two tools as well, as they are sturdy, weight-balanced, and clearly well-made from quality materials.
The tongs were easily the best of the bunch. The two ends have half-moon shaped grippers for whatever you're picking up with them, and the grippers are serrated so you can easily cut into whatever it is you're grilling. The shape and balance of them was perfect, and they have already replaced my other pair since they're easy to close when you're picking something up with them. My previous pair was too wide when the tongs were open and didn't fit in my hand too well, frequently causing me to drop them during use.
The spatula was, well, a spatula. Worked just as well as any spatula I've ever used, and looked really nice to boot. All in all, this set of three Cave Tools grilling utensils appears to be a well-made and quality purchase and would be useful for anyone who's serious about grilling, whether they're a novice or a pro. These would make any guy happy to receive for a gift especially Christmas! You can purchase them from Cave Tools here and SAVE on the Grill Set with 15% Off using code FWOBWJHP

The Tiny One and I were excited to try our very own Vegetable Bouquet! As soon as I unwrapped everything I was astounded at the attention to detail and creativity that had gone into creating such a beautiful arrangement. Crudite Creations are vegetables arranged in an artful way and they are perfect for events and celebrations. BUT they are also a fun way to get kids and picky eaters to eat more healthy veggies especially since they are cut and arranged in such a visually appealing manner.

With the Tiny One now in preschool, I loved having some of the leftover squash and zucchini pieces to share in his lunch or even for our picnic dinners. Apparently cutting them into shapes makes eating veggies more fun to kids, which means I am going to need a veggie cutting class with Lauren Brooks stat!
The company also sources all their ingredients from local suppliers and when available local farm stands!

Reasons Crudité Creations is AWESOME!
- It is HEALTHY!!!
- It makes choosing a healthy option "Cool"!
- Kids LOVE it!
- The owners are Professional & AMAZING!
- The Company is EXTREMELY supportive of their community and support the Newton Mother’s Forum (fellow Moms!) and local elementary schools!

Crudité Creations (www.cruditecreations.com) was recently featured on WCVB’s Chronicle show as part of their “what’s new” segment, and is receiving widespread acclaim for their beautiful and healthy vegetable bouquets. The arrangements and their selection of gourmet dips are a perfect addition to any summer event or celebration.
To take advantage of this offer please log on to the Crudité Creations web store and use the “capecod” discount code.

We recently had an amazing opportunity to check out the first book in the Belly Book collection: Can't Wait to Show You! Local Cape Cod Moms & Authors Jacqueline Boyle & Susan Lupone Stonis collaborated on this book which seeks to bring literacy to our children right from the beginning!
Recent research from the University of Helsinki have found that newborn babies learn and remember words that they heard repeatedly in the 3rd trimester of pregnancy.
Belly Books are great because they help deepen the connection between the new baby to be and the family. The babies will remember the voice and rhythm of the story after they are born and it will help soothe them.

"The book fits well to belly and is a comfortable size and weight. The majority of the book rhymes nicely with upbeat and positive whimsical images of childhood such as first experiences of sun beams and snowflakes. The babies vary in appearance throughout the book and it is a great bonding experience to have with baby to be. I look forward to rereading it once the baby arrives."
Below, Amy was able to interview both Jacqueline & Susan regarding this awesome venture. Check out the video below for some great insight from the authors, their backgrounds, how they balance their families and this project and where they are heading!
This book is great for a gift (hint Mother's Day is coming, and we've heard about lots of baby showers happening soon!). You can purchase it locally at Titcomb's Bookstore (book signing May 10, 2014 1pm) in Sandwich or on Amazon. | |

The holidays are upon us we all know what that means…. GIFTS! If you have been a good boy or girl you may wake up to a shiny new iPad or other tablet under your tree on Christmas morning! In one of my old posts, I’ve shared some of my favorite apps for speech therapy. Today I will add to that list and I hope you might try some of these apps out with your children after Christmas day!

Price: $.99
Description: iBaby buttons is a great app for young children to learn new vocabulary and cause and effect. With a touch of the screen a button appears on the screen. Another touch turns the button around and reveals the customizable picture with sound. One more touch makes the picture pop and disappear.
Speech/Language use:
I love customizing this app to include a variety of people and animals and work on prompting my clients to say “hi” and “bye” as the buttons turn to reveal the people/animals.

Developer: Grasshopper Apps
Price: FREE
Description: Phonics Studio comes with over 2,500 colorful pictures of phonics sounds grouped by letter. Choose a letter and which positions words that you want the sound to appear and then flip through the flashcards to see the picture and hear the word. It also comes with a recording feature to help your little one hear him/herself say the word.
Speech/Language use:
This app is great for children learning how to read and for children working on articulation. In therapy, these bright pictures are a great motivator and my clients love recording their voices while practicing their sounds using this FREE app!

Developer: Grasshopper Apps
Price: FREE -$2.99
Description: Bitsboard is a customizable app that allows you to create decks of cards to study and play games with. Search the Bitsboard library for a picture or upload your own to suit your needs. Once your deck is created, choose from 13 different games to meet your child’s learning needs! One of my favorite parts of this app is that boards can be shared among users so you may not need to always start from scratch!
Speech/Language use:
I use this app in so many ways in therapy! This app is great for creating a schedule or social story for children who need some structure. I create custom word lists for my clients to download at home and use for homework. I use it to create flashcards for my clients to work on receptively identifying pictures. Bitsboard is my number one free app that I recommend to all of my clients!
If you find yourself lucky enough to wake up to a new iPad or tablet on Christmas morning, I hope you will take the time to explore these apps and use them with your children!

Christmas is coming and it is time to start thinking about what toys to buy for your children. As always, I am an advocate for thinking about language development, even when buying toys! I have a list of my favorite toys that I love playing with when I work with my clients and when I play with my daughter. These toys are open-ended, fun and best of all – they are great for expanding language! Here are some of my favorites to choose from:
Kitchen Set and Pretend Food

At my office and at my house, we have the Melissa & Doug Wooden Velcro Food. These foods look realistic, are very sturdy and provide hours of cutting fun! My daughter loves to combine different types of foods to make different “meals” that we can pretend to eat. She uses her stuffed animals to set up a “restaurant” and cooks meals, using this food, to serve to all of her “friends”. This allows us to introduce a variety of new vocabulary words and scripts about eating, serving and cooking in a restaurant.
Blocks

At my house, we have the Imagibricks Giant Building Blocks. These blocks are often turned into a road that roams around my daughter’s room or a castle where a magical princess lives. They provide hours of pretend play fun!
Farms, Houses and Jungles

I love the Fisher Price Little People Farm. The pieces are colorful, bright and durable. There are also a variety of other Little People accessories that can be purchased later to further build the pretend-play repertoire!
I hope these suggestions provide you with some gift ideas for your little ones this Holiday season!
If you are concerned about your child’s language development call Golden Speech Therapy and schedule a free screening!
