Bridgeview Montessori School![]()
1. Tell us about your business/non profit and how it benefits local families?
Bridgeview Montessori School provides a Montessori alternative to local public and parochial schools. Although the Montessori philosophy is over 100 years old, its tenets are in keeping with today's STEM and project-based focus. 2. Where is it located? We are conveniently located at the base of the Sagamore Bridge at 885 Sandwich Road, Sagamore, MA 3. What is your favorite thing about our community? I love how family oriented our community is. At our school, we see grandparents, aunts, uncles and, of course, parents all having a hand is the education of the child. 4. How else do you get involved with the community? Bridgeview Montessori pairs with a local organization for a three-year cycle to help that organization in whatever ways it needs. In the past we have partnered with the Bourne Head Start and the Maya Childcare Cooperative that is a local organization that supports a Guatemalan preschool for children of working moms. Most recently we have begun our partnership with the National Marine Life Center in Buzzards Bay. So far we have raised over $700 to donate to the center. We will be presenting them with a check in January. 5. What do you think are the biggest challenges facing parents in our community? Parents today want authentic experiences with their families. It is hard for that to happen with the overabundance of technology in our society. Parents also want to be assured that their children are being served in the school setting. Sometimes communication with everyone involved in a child's program can be hard. Here is a place where perhaps technology could be helpful, but we find that families really crave face to face meaningful conversation. 6. What is your favorite memory or story over the years involving you and your business? Bridgeview Montessori became a non-profit organization in 2008. At the time, the school was faced with dropping enrollment due to a floundering economy. One of the most poignant memories I have is of a 2008 faculty meeting when our dedicated faculty decided to "dig deep" and do whatever needed to open our doors and continue to provide a stellar school experience. Living through that hard moment makes our current thriving learning community that much more resilient and powerful. 7. What advice would you give parents and caregivers in our community? Keep your schedule for your children reasonable. Let your children be bored and figure out what to do next. Unplug and try to be in the moment with your children. Play with water.... read a long chapter book. Get really dirty. 8. Do you have any specials, events, or anything else taking place this upcoming year that our parents should know about? For those interested in a Bridgeview Montessori education or Montessori in general, the best thing to do is to contact our Assistant Head of School, Suzanne Lawson at 508-888-3567/slawson@bridgeviewmontessori.org. Even if you are just curious, visit our website, www.bridgeviewmontessori.org, take a look, have a conversation. Peace cannot be kept by force; it can only be kept by understanding. ― Albert Einstein

PFAS-REACH
1. Tell us about your business/non profit and how it benefits local families?
PFAS-REACH (Research, Education and Action for Community Health) is conducting a children’s health study to learn more about potential effects of a class of water contaminants called PFAS. Parents of young children in and around Hyannis may be eligible to take part in our study. This study will improve our understanding of the health risks associated with exposure to PFAS chemicals in children and may inform the development of drinking water guidelines that protect children’s health, on Cape Cod and beyond. Our study will also develop resources to support communities that have had PFAS contamination in their drinking water. Elevated levels of PFAS were found in Hyannis water prior to July 2016. And we are also reaching out to residents throughout Cape Cod to share information about ways we can all reduce our exposures to PFAS chemicals, which are also common in consumer products. PFAS-REACH is a 5-year research project funded by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS). The project is led by Silent Spring Institute in collaboration with Northeastern University, Michigan State University, Massachusetts Breast Cancer Coalition, Testing for Pease, and Toxics Action Center. 2. Where is it located? Our PFAS-REACH children’s health study includes children in and around Hyannis, as well as in Portsmouth, NH. Our project partners are located on Cape Cod as well as in the Boston area, New Hampshire, Vermont, and Michigan. 3. What is your favorite thing about our community? Cape Cod is very family oriented, and there are many resources available to help families get the support they need. The Cape community is full of dedicated individuals who are committed to improving the lives of all families across the Cape. 4. How else do you get involved with the community? We are now enrolling families of preschool aged children to take part in our Children’s Health Study. We will continue to attend community events and connect with parent resource networks throughout the year. 5. What do you think are the biggest challenges facing parents in our community? We’ve heard from many community members that housing is the biggest issue facing families on the Cape. 6. What is your favorite memory or story over the years involving you and your business? We have loved meeting members of the early learning community and the healthcare community who have been so supportive of our Children’s Health Study over the past year. We are so grateful to everyone who has provided guidance and offered to help spread the word about our study – it’s truly a team effort. 7. What advice would you give parents and caregivers in our community? We encourage parents and guardians with preschool age children in the Hyannis area to learn about our Children’s Health Study to see if their children are eligible to take part in the study. And we encourage everyone to learn about PFAS chemicals and tips to reduce their family’s exposure to these chemicals through simple changes in daily habits and switching out certain products containing these chemicals. Our website, www.pfas-exchange.org, has a resources page with more information for families. 8. Do you have any specials, events, or anything else taking place this upcoming year that our parents should know about? We will be attending community events this year to share information about our Children’s Health Study. Visit our website, www.pfas-exchange.org to find out about our upcoming events and to learn more about our study!

Elevated Impressions![]()
1. Tell us about your business/non profit and how it benefits local families?
We help to make the special events in a person’s life truly memorable 2. Where is it located? East Sandwich, MA 3. What is your favorite thing about our community? We love the pride so many of us share in the place where we live. We year-round residents choose to be here because we love this island, and we deeply appreciate the beautiful aspects of our community. 4. How else do you get involved with the community? We have been active in supporting Special Olympics Cape Cod, PanMass, Cape Abilities and National MS Society 5. What do you think are the biggest challenges facing parents in our community? The ability for us to provide adequate employment and housing opportunities for our children once they graduate high school or college is an essential shortcoming the Cape needs to overcome. 6. What is your favorite memory or story over the years involving you and your business The very first project we installed was at a local children’s boutique. We set up the backdrop then waited inconspicuously to try and catch a reaction from a passer-by. The first child to see the rainbow colored wall was a little girl, perhaps 3 or 4. She spotted the wall, gasped, held her cheeks with her hands, and ran towards the colorful streamers at full speed! Her excitement told us we were on the right track- and we’ve been making smiles ever since. 7. What advice would you give parents and caregivers in our community? Be realistic about the opportunities our children have ahead of them, and support what’s best for them, rather than what we may want for them. “Follow the Child”- Maria Montessori 8. Do you have any specials, events, or anything else taking place this upcoming year that our parents should know about? Our official Launch Party is in the spring! Until then- we can’t wait to continue elevating events all over Cape Cod!

Children's COVE
Tell us about your business/nonprofit and how it benefits local families?
Children’s Cove is the Child Advocacy Center for the Cape & Islands. Children’s Cove provides a compassionate, efficient, child-friendly organization for child abuse intervention. We provide a streamlined process to support children and family with a focus on hope, empowerment, and the healthiest outcome. Where is it located? Barnstable, but serves the entire Cape & Islands. What is your favorite thing about our community? There are so many people and organizations who work together for the betterment of children and families on Cape Cod & the Islands. How else do you get involved with the community? I serve as a volunteer for CCYP, I am board-chair for Leadership Cape Cod, and do my best to be flexible in my work hours to serve as much of our community as possible. What do you think are the biggest challenges facing parents in our community? Some of the big ones are the cost of living and challenges with affordability and accessibility of child care. More personally, just the difficulty to connect to other parents in the community and form meaningful peer relationships. What is your favorite memory or story over the years involving you and your business? I interact with many, many people. Sometimes survivors, or parents of survivors of abuse come to me and say thank you and give an update to how things are going. Most of the time I am not involved in the direct care aspect of our work, and sometimes these are people who came years before I started working at the Cove. But the message is always the same: You helped so much and are amazing. It’s a blessing to work somewhere that that is the message constantly given back. What advice would you give parents and caregivers in our community? Child sexual abuse is preventable. Sometimes topics which seem difficult to talk about, really aren’t. It’s the fear we hold in our own hearts about those topics which hold us back. Children want to listen, learn, absorb, and model everything we say. Let body safety and openness to discuss difficult topics be one of them. If you need help, we would be happy to help you at Children’s Cove in how to have the conversation. Do you have any specials, events, or anything else taking place this upcoming year that our parents should know about? Keep your eyes on our social media pages for some special events coming in April this year!

Community Health Center of Cape Cod
1. Tell us about your business/non profit and how it benefits local families?
The mission of Community Health Center of Cape Cod is to improve the health of our community through the provision of comprehensive, high-quality, compassionate health care to all, regardless of ability to pay. The Health Center provides care to more than 17,000 individuals within a "complete medical home" model, where integrated health services are provided under one roof. This complete medical home model includes primary care, behavioral health care, dental care, women's health services, optometry, addiction recovery services, on-site affordable prescriptions, x-ray and ultrasound services, case management services, barrier assessments and assistance, Veterans care, and many other specialized programs for individuals and families. 2. Where is it located? The Health Center has four locations: Mashpee (107 Commercial Street), Falmouth (210 Jones Road, in Homeport), Bourne (123 Waterhouse Road) and Centerville (1185B Falmouth Road). 3. What is your favorite thing about our community? One of my favorite things about our community is just that: community. I come from a bigger city where most people kept to themselves and were sometimes overly self-focused. The Cape community, when it comes to business life and personal/family life, seems to be more friendly and collaborative and I like that about where we live. And you can’t beat the beauty and the beaches. 4. How else do you get involved with the community? The Health Center is very active in our community and is always looking to identify ways to work together with like-minded organizations and to get the word out. We participate in a number of events like this throughout the year to try to inform the community about our services, programs and locations. We also engage in wellness and outreach activities to help families and individuals gain the resources they need to lead healthier lives. Our team of staff and volunteers are always looking for additional ways to engage with the community about health-related issues and how to address them. Personally, I am a Board Member for Philanthropy Partners of the Cape and Islands, a basketball and tee-ball coach for Brewster Recreation and a Junior Achievement volunteer with Falmouth VIPS. 5. What do you think are the biggest challenges facing parents in our community? There are a number: affordability of housing, availability of child-care, access to health care and balancing work-life and home-life responsibilities. One way that Community Health Center of Cape Cod does address these issues is by providing comprehensive care services to anyone who needs care, and by providing support in the health insurance enrollment process at each of our offices. 6. What is your favorite memory or story over the years involving you and your business? I have one that seems to occur on a relative frequent basis. It is often at events like these, or out in the community, when I tell people that I work at Community Health Center of Cape Cod. Some people have not heard of the organization, which means I am at the right place and talking to the right person so they can become informed. But for those people who have heard of us, almost all of the responses are overwhelmingly positive. They speak so highly about the care teams they see, and their experience at the Health Center. It makes me proud to be part of a team that is doing so much good in the community. 7. What advice would you give parents and caregivers in our community? There are resources out there which cover so many different issues and topics, so don’t be afraid to us them. There is a wealth of information at local libraries, chambers of commerce, health care facilities and more. Being a parent can often-times be difficult and stressful, but there are people and organizations around that can make the process easier. 8. Do you have any specials, events, or anything else taking place this upcoming year that our parents should know about? Community Health Center of Cape Cod is always accepting new patients, so if you are looking for any type of health care services, you are welcome to visit any of our offices, or our website at www.chcofcapecod.org. We also offer walk-in care in our Mashpee (Monday-Saturday) and Centerville (Monday-Thursday) offices, for anyone who needs it, regardless of if they are a Health Center patient. So if you or your children wake up and don’t feel great, you can stop by either of those offices for a visit. We will also be hosting an inaugural 5K fun run/walk on the evening of Tuesday, May 19. If anyone would like more information about this event, or any of the services and offerings at Community Health Center of Cape Cod, you can call Chris Ellis at (508) 477-5990.

Foster MA
Is there room in your home and heart for a foster child? The Department of Children and Families is actively recruiting foster parents for children in your community of Cape Cod coming into care. We are searching for individuals or families with the love and patience to help foster children. You can be single, married, partnered, divorced or widowed. You can own your home or rent.
We need homes for children aged 0 to 22 which include sibling groups, children with special needs, medically involved children, and infants born exposed to drugs and older teens. We are looking for long-term foster homes but also have a need for emergency and respite homes which involve a shorter time commitment on the part of a foster family. Our goal is to provide our foster children with a supportive and healing environment in a home in their own community until they can be reunited with their families or another plan can be made on their behalf. The rewards of providing daily care, guidance and acceptance are immeasurable. If you are thinking about becoming a foster parent, you can learn more about the application process and the supports provided by contacting Recruiter Courtney Davis at 508-894-3779, 1-800-KIDS-508 or visiting our website at mass.gov/dcf

Massachusetts Breast Cancer Coalition![]()
1. Tell us about your business/non-profit and how it benefits local families?
Massachusetts Breast Cancer Coalition (MBCC) is dedicated to preventing environmental causes of breast cancer through community education, research advocacy, and changes to public policy. Through our free community education programs like the Let's Talk Prevention program/tour and the environmental health program for high school students, MBCC works to engage the public on ways to reduce their exposure to chemicals of concern. Additionally, MBCC is working in partnership with our sister organization, Silent Spring Institute, as community partners on three national health projects on Cape Cod. The first project, funded by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS), is the STEEP Superfund Research Program. This project is led by the University of Rhode Island and includes researchers from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and Silent Spring Institute and focuses on private well water testing on Cape Cod for PFAS, as well as how PFAS enter groundwater from firefighting foams, wastewater, and other pollution sources. The second project, also funded by NIEHS, is PFAS-REACH (Research, Education, and Action for Community Health), led by Silent Spring Institute, along with researchers from Northeastern University and Michigan State University. The project examines PFAS exposures and their impacts on children’s health in Hyannis and at the Pease Tradeport in Portsmouth, NH. And, the third project is part of a larger multi-site study on PFAS health effects funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (or CDC) and the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (or ATSDR). Silent Spring Institute is the leading the study in Massachusetts, which will include both Hyannis and the Town of Ayer. The team also includes researchers from Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and Eastern Research Group, along with the community group People of Ayer Concerned about the Environment. The study will assess PFAS exposure and a range of health effects including immune response, kidney function, thyroid disease, liver disease, glycemic parameters, diabetes, and neurobehavioral outcomes in both children and adults. 2. Where is it located? MBCC is a statewide organization with an office located in Franklin, MA. 3. What is your favorite thing about our community? We appreciate the great diversity of the Cape Cod community. 4. How else do you get involved with the community? MBCC tries to participate in as many local events as possible to engage with the community. Additionally, we work with our sister organization Silent Spring Institute to bring research updates to the community. 5. What do you think are the biggest challenges facing parents in our community? The biggest challenge is that it is very expensive to live on Cape Cod, especially given the seasonality of some of the industries here. 6. What is your favorite memory or story over the years involving you and your business? Attending cancer support group meetings to talk and share with those touched by their cancer diagnosis in the hopes of being able to lend a guiding hand. 7. What advice would you give parents and caregivers in our community? To network with other parents as much as possible, and to utilize as many of the services available in our community, as needed. 8. Do you have any specials, events, or anything else taking place this upcoming year that our parents should know about? MBCC is inviting all parents who attend the Fair to join us for free at the Against the Tide event in Brewster on August 20, 2020. Against the Tide is a family-friendly multi-sport event that brings people together from all across the state in support of MBCC's mission of breast cancer prevention.

Where is it located? We are located in Bourne, Massachusetts. We serve Cape Cod, Boston & Rhode Island. 3. What is your favorite thing about our community? My favorite thing about this community is the connections that are made through working with local families, agencies and doctors serving Cape Cod. It is close knit and welcoming to those looking for support. 4. How else do you get involved with the community? Community outreach is so important. I have been involved with Angel Babies, a local nonprofit for over a year. They collect bridal and formal gowns to be made into burial gowns made for babies that are gone too soon. Cape Cod Baby hosts an Angel Gowns night once a month at the Bourne Community Building. We were also on the local Cape station WCAI-FM The Point with Mindy Todd to help spread awareness about miscarriage and stillbirth. 5. What do you think are the biggest challenges facing parents in our community? I believe the biggest challenge facing the parents in the community is lack of connection. Being a parent is hard and can often times feel lonely. We as a community need to come together to offer support to those who need it. In the age of social media it can be difficult to make real connections. In person interaction is needed, support groups, mommy & me, play dates & other social outings are a great way to find others in the community looking for the same connection. 6. What is your favorite memory or story over the years involving you and your business? My favorite memory is when a young girl (3) saw me at the grocery store after I had supported her family through the birth of their son. While we were at the hospital, I was the one who handed her the newest member of the family to hold for the first time. In the grocery store she yelled "hey dad! That's the lady that gave me my brother!" 7. What advice would you give parents and caregivers in our community? Advice I would give to parents is, you are not alone. Parenting is hard, each family faces their own struggles. We are here to help, we want you to succeed and feel confident in your abilities as a parent/caregiver. 8. Do you have any specials, events, or anything else taking place this upcoming year that our parents should know about? We will also be hosting a diaper drive to help local families in need, giving back to the community to show support. Crayon College![]()
1. Tell us about your business/non profit and how it benefits local families?
Crayon College at Bourne serves children 6 weeks through 6 years. We are open Monday through Friday from 6:30 am – 6:00 pm with open enrollment year-round. We believe that children learn and develop in a secure, loving environment. Since we are concerned with the whole child and each child as an individual, we aim to balance their development in all areas: social, emotional, physical, and intellectual while always promoting a positive atmosphere. 2. Where is it located? We are conveniently located just minutes from the Bourne rotary at 254 Shore Road in Bourne, on the Cape. 3. What is your favorite thing about our community? Our favorite part about this community is all the resources it provides for the different types of family units in the community. We also really enjoy all the family-oriented community events that happen throughout the year, and especially the events that the Bourne for Children Council put on weekly for families as well. 4. How else do you get involved with the community? Crayon College at Bourne is heavily involved in the community and especially working directly with the Bourne For Children Council on important topics and concerns for the children of Bourne. We also work very closely with families from the military base and provide a 10% military discount for tuition. We have really enjoyed being part of events in the community throughout years, like the Cape Cod Canal Day, STEM Day and Trunk or Treat. 5. What do you think are the biggest challenges facing parents in our community? We think the biggest challenge facing parents in the community is the lack of outside support systems for their families. Crayon College makes it our mission to provide as much support and care as possible to allow these families to feel at ease and provided for. We strive provide our families with the resources that are needed during those difficult times. 6. What is your favorite memory or story over the years involving you and your business? Crayon College was established in Kingston in 2004, opening the second location in Plymouth in 2007, then Bourne in 2016. Our favorite memory was when Bourne was voted the #1 Day Care/Preschool in the 2018 Wicked Local Readers’ Choice Awards for the area in only our second year, followed by being awarded SCORE’s Better Mousetrap Award in May 2019 for being so successful in the first three years in business. 7. What advice would you give parents and caregivers in our community?
