Sesame Workshop Launches Caring for Each Other Initiative to Help Parents and Children During Coronavirus Pandemic
Rich array of Sesame Street content, including newly produced Sesame Street Muppet moments designed to entertain, educate, and comfort parents, caregivers, and children (March 20, 2020 – New York, NY) – In response to the unprecedented uncertainty facing young children and families, Sesame Workshop, the nonprofit educational organization behind Sesame Street, is offering a broad variety of free resources to help children and families during the coronavirus pandemic. Today’s announcement of the Caring for Each Other initiative marks the beginning of a commitment to support families for the duration of this crisis, with brand new content featuring the Sesame Street Muppets sharing messages of love and kindness, playful learning activities, and virtual play dates launching soon. Mindful that the adults who care for children need support too, the resources are intended to help caregivers as well as children. The initiative features resources designed to help parents provide comfort and manage anxiety, as well as help with creating routines, fostering playful learning at home, and staying physically and mentally healthy. SesameStreet.org/caring will be regularly updated to meet the needs of families as the situation evolves. Families can also watch Sesame Street episodes on HBO, PBS stations, and the PBS KIDS 24/7 channel, with an expanded offering of free on-demand episodes of Sesame Street on PBS KIDS digital platforms. “Around the world, young children’s lives are being turned upside down, and parents and caregivers are looking for ways to give their children—and themselves—a sense of stability in this new normal,” said Dr. Rosemarie Truglio, Senior Vice President for Curriculum and Content, Sesame Workshop. “But there are things parents and caregivers can do to face each day with optimism. Sesame Street is here to provide the caring adults in children’s lives with the resources they need to help children, and foster their healthy development at home.” Sesame Workshop is also creating brand new content on topics like handwashing, how to cough or sneeze properly, and how taking good care of yourself means taking good care of others, which will be available in the US and globally in a wide range of languages and released in the coming weeks. Sesame Street has long been a source of comfort for children and families during difficult times,” said Dr. Jeanette Betancourt, Senior Vice President for US Social Impact, Sesame Workshop. “While we don’t always know what to expect, we know that Sesame Street friends have the power to convey simple strategies and messages to help children and the caring adults in their lives find comfort. With Caring for Each Other, we can help families get through these uncertain times and build hope for the future.” Additionally, over 110 free Sesame Street ebooks are available on all major ebook platforms including Amazon Kindle, Apple Books, Barnes & Noble Nook, Google Play, and Kobo. Resources will also be distributed through a wide range of partners in the US and globally, including community providers serving vulnerable families through Sesame Street in Communities and PBS stations. 1. Tell us about your business/non profit and how it benefits local families?
Crayon College at Bourne serves children 6 weeks through 6 years. We are open Monday through Friday from 6:30 am – 6:00 pm with open enrollment year-round. We believe that children learn and develop in a secure, loving environment. Since we are concerned with the whole child and each child as an individual, we aim to balance their development in all areas: social, emotional, physical, and intellectual while always promoting a positive atmosphere. 2. Where is it located? We are conveniently located just minutes from the Bourne rotary at 254 Shore Road in Bourne, on the Cape. 3. What is your favorite thing about our community? Our favorite part about this community is all the resources it provides for the different types of family units in the community. We also really enjoy all the family-oriented community events that happen throughout the year, and especially the events that the Bourne for Children Council put on weekly for families as well. 4. How else do you get involved with the community? Crayon College at Bourne is heavily involved in the community and especially working directly with the Bourne For Children Council on important topics and concerns for the children of Bourne. We also work very closely with families from the military base and provide a 10% military discount for tuition. We have really enjoyed being part of events in the community throughout years, like the Cape Cod Canal Day, STEM Day and Trunk or Treat. 5. What do you think are the biggest challenges facing parents in our community? We think the biggest challenge facing parents in the community is the lack of outside support systems for their families. Crayon College makes it our mission to provide as much support and care as possible to allow these families to feel at ease and provided for. We strive provide our families with the resources that are needed during those difficult times. 6. What is your favorite memory or story over the years involving you and your business? Crayon College was established in Kingston in 2004, opening the second location in Plymouth in 2007, then Bourne in 2016. Our favorite memory was when Bourne was voted the #1 Day Care/Preschool in the 2018 Wicked Local Readers’ Choice Awards for the area in only our second year, followed by being awarded SCORE’s Better Mousetrap Award in May 2019 for being so successful in the first three years in business. 7. What advice would you give parents and caregivers in our community? Advice to the parents and caregivers of the community, Crayon College wants your children to be confident in their ability to manage their school environment, to solve problems, to make friends and to rely on adults who are not family members for guidance and support. Children who enter child-care at a young age tend to go off to elementary school a little more confident, independent, and eager to learn. 8. Do you have any specials, events, or anything else taking place this upcoming year that our parents should know about? We do have a lot of fun and exciting things planned for the upcoming year. We will be out in the community for various things so keep a look-out for our name. Follow us on Facebook and Instagram for more upcoming event details! ![]() Creative Fundraising on Cape Cod By: Sarah Richards Who here dreads fundraisers? (Not another magazine drive!) We were looking for a social (and local!) way to both raise some funds for our kiddos, and to bring new business to some locals. After bouncing the idea of having a wine and oyster night off of Cape Cod Winery owner Erika Orlandella, she was thrilled at the idea! And just like that, we were off and running. ![]() The West Falmouth Preschool held their first annual wine and oyster fundraiser at Cape Cod Winery this past Saturday on a quintessential New England October afternoon. Complete with crisp air, a beautiful sunset, pumpkins, cheery mums, haybales, cornstalks, and fire pits, guests lounged in Adirondack chairs overlooking the vineyard, and sipped their vines under the twinkling lights of the grand white tent on the hill. ![]() The school provided deliciously "stick-to-your-ribs" comfort foods like New England Clam Chowder, pulled chicken sandwiches, and Portuguese "Jagg," for guests to purchase. Accompanying these soul foods were the freshest oysters from the famed (and local!) Megansett Oyster Company. These sweet and briny delicasies were such a hit, we had sold a whole bushel in less than an hour! ![]() Guests were wowed by the musical offerings of the Black Velvet Band (an Irish duo) and singer/songwriter Ric Allendorf throughout the afternoon and evening. The beautifully elegant Pop-Up Bubbly Van provided limited edition bubbly versions of Cape Cod Winery's famous "Mermaid Water" Rose and Riesling, which were a huge hit with the crowd! Additionally, guests were treated to the most gorgeous backdrop (for all their Instagram pics!) complete with a towering white flower wall and (biodegradable) balloon display from Elevated Impressions. ![]() Delicious wine flowed, music wafted through the crisp air, firepits cast warming glows all around, chowder warmed the soul, and everyone enjoyed the company of good friends! And all this fun for a great cause AND while supporting local businesses on Cape? Oh, yes. Be sure to stay tuned for when our event will be in 2020! Cheers! ![]() Sarah is a newbie to the Cape, but has a deep love for the ocean. She has recently left her job of 10 years in music education and re-located to Falmouth to support her husbands' business. This "Mom-prenuear" is busy growing her Pure Haven Essentials business by helping families to live toxic free, clicking away behind her camera, chasing after her 2 adorable sons! She enjoys cooking/baking healthy (and guilty!) foods, fitness, boating, singing, and connecting with awesome new people. Sarah also helps manage our free community calendar and events. The center is designed to promote social, physical, and cognitive development in each child. Our activities allow children to face and overcome individual challenges. We strive to enhance the essential elements of creativity, critical thinking, self- control, responsibility, independence, social skills and self-esteem to face and overcome individual challenges. 2. Where is it located? We are located in West Barnstable at Cape Cod Community College in the Life Fitness Center 3. What is your favorite thing about our community? Our community builds strength from each other in time of need. 4. How else do you get involved with the community? The Children’s College has community visitors throughout the year along with involvement from CCCC students and programs at Cape Cod Community College. 5. What do you think are the biggest challenges facing parents in our community? The biggest challenges facing parents in our community is technology – so many of us forget that being in the moment is what is important. Do more things with your children that make you forget to look at your phone. Wouldn’t you rather be in the picture or the memory then just behind the “camera”? 6. What is your favorite memory or story over the years involving you and your business? There are so many memories it is hard to pick just one; I am reminded of something every day. There are many comical preschool compilations and compliments that come to mind. I believe that myself as well as my staff can remember at least a dozen times when a child finally realizes a concept or gets inspired to try something new. I am so grateful for the parents that entrust their children with me and my teachers. 7. What advice would you give parents and caregivers in our community? The advice I would give parents and caregivers in our community is to ask for help or assistance when you need it -there is so many resources out that can help with developmental and financial issues. “If a child cannot learn in the way we teach, we must teach in a way the child can learn.” -Unknown With the Cape Cod Parent Resource Fair rapidly approaching we will be sharing blog posts on our participating sponsors, vendors and nonprofits.
