Creative Fundraising on Cape Cod

Who here dreads fundraisers? (Not another magazine drive!)

We were looking for a social (and local!) way to both raise some funds for our kiddos, and to bring new business to some locals. After bouncing the idea of having a wine and oyster night off of Cape Cod Winery owner Erika Orlandella, she was thrilled at the idea! And just like that, we were off and running.

The West Falmouth Preschool held their first annual wine and oyster fundraiser at Cape Cod Winery this past Saturday on a quintessential New England October afternoon. Complete with crisp air, a beautiful sunset, pumpkins, cheery mums, haybales, cornstalks, and fire pits, guests lounged in Adirondack chairs overlooking the vineyard, and sipped their vines under the twinkling lights of the grand white tent on the hill.

The school provided deliciously "stick-to-your-ribs" comfort foods like New England Clam Chowder, pulled chicken sandwiches, and Portuguese "Jagg," for guests to purchase. Accompanying these soul foods were the freshest oysters from the famed (and local!) Megansett Oyster Company. These sweet and briny delicasies were such a hit, we had sold a whole bushel in less than an hour!

Guests were wowed by the musical offerings of the Black Velvet Band (an Irish duo) and singer/songwriter Ric Allendorf throughout the afternoon and evening. The beautifully elegant Pop-Up Bubbly Van provided limited edition bubbly versions of Cape Cod Winery's famous "Mermaid Water" Rose and Riesling, which were a huge hit with the crowd! Additionally, guests were treated to the most gorgeous backdrop (for all their Instagram pics!) complete with a towering white flower wall and (biodegradable) balloon display from Elevated Impressions.

Delicious wine flowed, music wafted through the crisp air, firepits cast warming glows all around, chowder warmed the soul, and everyone enjoyed the company of good friends!

And all this fun for a great cause AND while supporting local businesses on Cape?

Oh, yes.

Need a change of pace this Summer?

Ever feel like you do the same old summer routine with the kids every summer? Need a break from the crowds? If yes, read on!

Heritage gardens and museum is a gorgeous little gem tucked away in the woods of Sandwich here on Cape Cod. Though this was only our second visit (first time was at a wedding reception), it certainly won’t be the last!!

As someone with a “black thumb,” I can’t even begin to imagine the amount of time and effort it takes to maintain the impeccable gardens and grounds at Heritage. (Nor do I ever wish to find out...gardening is just NOT my thing...anyway...that being said, please forgive me for my lack of botanical knowledge and terminology in this post.)

Upon arriving on our beautiful sunny day, we were welcomed with lush waves of purple flowers (of which species I have no idea)....aaaaaand about a million middle school children.

*womp womp*

Lucky for us, they were on their way out!
(Tip from a staff member: avoid the morning hours the last two weeks of May and first two weeks of June as they are completely mobbed with schools on field trips)

We visited the restrooms before grabbing our tickets, and I was pleasantly surprised to find that it fit our tandem style stroller! Potty FTW!
(Tip: use the restrooms at the gates and at the carousel, otherwise you may end up having to use a port-a-potty)

We took our time wandering around the grounds, admiring the flowers, and stopping for a sniff or a photo every so often. Peonies are my absolute favorite flowers (one of the few I do know!), and I had to snap photos of a few varieties along the way!
(Tip: If you are a shutterbug like me, you will definitely want to bring your camera along for some beautiful shots!)

There were several art installations throughout the grounds, and we found an interactive one along our way. It was great fun to spell out words with the blocks, and it was in a perfect spot to have a picnic!
(Tip: If you don’t bring your own picnic, there is a place inside the grounds-not far from the front entrance-where you can get concessions including hot dogs, salads, adult beverages, and even ice cream!)

As we enjoyed our lunch, we spotted a really cool antique car going around the paths!

Of course, no trip to Heritage would be complete without a spin (or three!) on the carousel! Again, we hit it at the perfect time as the school children had apparently swarmed the place that morning.

(Tip: The carousel is FREE and you can ride as many times as you would like! There was basically nobody there when we went. It is a great place to take pause in your day. You can cool off from the sun/heat, use the restroom, and check out the museum.)

Our last stop of the day was at Hidden Hollow-an enchanting little grove where the young at heart can create, explore, play, climb, learn, and enjoy! By using the contour of the natural land, this perfectly curated space provided an area for pretty much anything! Creating art, digging in the sand, playing in silk tents, climbing up to a treehouse overlook, playing music on wooden xylophones, putting on a puppet show for an audience, and the newest feature this year-a water play area!

What I love the most about Hidden Hollow is that all the elements are natural or fundamental. There were hardly any plastic elements or bright colors (aside from the silks used for the tents) in this area.

Visitors are able to appreciate the natural beauty of the surroundings, and get lost in their imagination through play! I loved seeing my kids in an environment that encourages playing with the natural elements-sand, water, wood, stones.
(Tip: bring a towel or two, and a change of clothes for your littles-and possibly yourself! They will get wet!)

As the sun was setting, we (well, I) trudged back up the steep hills and heard a beautiful flute playing. Someone in costume was playing in a secluded field. I managed to snap a few shots as we enjoyed the mesmerizing music!
(Side note: wear good sneakers, and be prepared for a good workout due to the hills! Chucks were not my friend this day...)

There is so much to see and do at Heritage, and we definitely did not do it all in one afternoon! But, that is why we chose to get a family pass for the year! Family passes are available, and are worth the admission if you and just one child go as few as three times. They offer some free and discounted passes to your guests, as well as discounts to off-season events as well as to their adventure course.

If you are looking for a change of pace from the beaches, bike paths, or playgrounds this summer, you absolutely must check out Heritage Gardens and Museum!

How do you and/or your business get into the spirit of giving?

I love helping families learn about the toxins they encounter in their daily lives and how making some small changes can really make a huge difference to their health! We have sent care packages of toiletries to homeless veterans, and last year we helped to send toiletry kits to children’s hospitals all over the country!

What is your favorite part about this time of year?

Experiencing the magic of Santa through our son’s eyes. Even though he is only 3, he loves everything about our Christmas tree, seeing all the decorated houses, and meeting “the Big guy” in person!

Over the years what is the best example of local kindness you have experienced or seen during the holidays?

Well, just the other day a woman working at West Falmouth Market saw me come in, arms full with my 4 month old son, and proceeded to personally help me grab the few items I needed for last minute Thanksgiving cooking.

What is your local family “must attend” holiday event?

We just moved late last December so we missed many of the “big events” last year, but we did the Polar Express at the Cape Cod Railway and our son talked about it all year! We heard the Falmouth parade is quite the event, so we are looking forward to that this year!

Would you share with us a family tradition?

On Christmas Eve we open one present as a family-Christmas jammies!!!

What are your words of advice for our families during this special time?

My words of advice would be to focus not on presents, but to BE present. Make great memories with your kids instead of stressing out. Take some time to do a fun activity with your kids like baking cookies, snuggling up under a cozy blanket with a classic holiday movie, volunteer or donate to a shelter/soup kitchen/animal shelter/nursing home, serenade your neighbors with Christmas carols, or just hop in the car (sporting your favorite jammies!) with some hot cocoa-and check out the holiday lights!!

What is your favorite holiday dessert?

Oh wow-just one? I have quite the sweet tooth, but my Mother makes the best peanut butter bon bons, “bark,” and lacy cookies! Perfect for after dinner coffee or tea!!

Do you have a favorite holiday song? If so, which one and why?

Coming from a musical family and a background in music, I’ve seen/heard/played/sung so many-its hard to choose just one! That being said, there is one album that has always been a family favorite. John Denver and the Muppets Christmas album!!! We always put this on the record player while putting up the tree, and those familiar muppet voices still make me smile to this day!

Do you have any specials or events taking place this holiday season?
