Bzzyfingers![]() 1. Tell us about your business/non profit and how it benefits local families? BZZYFINGERS was born out of my love for creating fun and functional items for babies, children, and adults. I strive to provide high quality products at fair prices, and regularly donate merchandise to a variety of non-profits and charity organizations. 2. Where is it located? My studio is based at my home in East Falmouth. BZZYFINGERS baby items are available for purchase at Caline for Kids in Falmouth and Cape Kids in Mashpee Commons; adult accessories at Little Anchor Boutique in East Falmouth. 3. What is your favorite thing about our community? I was born and raised in Falmouth. My family and friends are here, my home, the people and places I’ve grown up loving are all RIGHT HERE. I love the small town vibe and the way so many people work together to make Cape Cod a magical place to live. ![]() 4. How else do you get involved with the community? I am the PTO President (and Secretary!) at Teaticket Elementary School in East Falmouth and spend many hours each week volunteering. I also work at the BBC in Falmouth and am involved with organizing multiple fundraising events throughout the year such as the Polar Plunge, Lennonfest, sponsoring families during the holiday season, and working with organizations such as the Special Olympics with our Tip A Cop events (to name a few!). 5. What do you think are the biggest challenges facing parents in our community? Living on Cape Cod is not easy! Most locals don’t grow up spending leisurely summer days at yacht clubs; they work bussing tables as a second or third job to afford their rent or mortgage. The cost of living on the Cape makes affording childcare a huge financial burden. 6. What is your favorite memory or story over the years involving you and your business? I absolutely LOVE interacting with repeat customers! Seeing the same faces year after year visiting my booth at a local craft fair totally makes my day. 7. What advice would you give parents and caregivers in our community? Don’t be afraid to ask for help! Whether you are a new parent looking for support or resources, a seasoned caregiver with a new child in your care who has special needs, a grandparent raising a grandchild that is “out of the loop” and needs assistance... just ask! There are so many resources available to us through our medical professionals, school systems and social services- but if you don’t ASK for information or help, it will NOT fall into your lap. 8. Do you have any specials, events, or anything else taking place this upcoming year that our parents should know about? Keep an eye out at Caline for Kids, Cake Kids, and Little Anchor Boutique as well as at local craft fairs to check our BZZYFINGERS products in person! Check out this week's Cape Kids Cast brought to you exclusively from Cape Cod Moms. This week they share about why it is important to shop local as well as highlight the annual holiday giveaway. They also will highlight some upcoming events. Stay tuned in December for our Cookie special, gifts for parents, and possibly an interview with the jolliest elf around: Santa Claus! Cathie from Emerald Eye Photography! Follow her on: How do you and/or your business get into the spirit of giving? I always love participating in Festivus! I've also been participating in raffles for discounted sessions at recent events and I've met some great people. New this year, I'm going to be giving out special gifts to returning clients, so make sure you check your mail! I love working with the same families and seeing their growth. What is your favorite part about this time of year? As much as I'm starting to not love driving at night, I do enjoy seeing all of the holiday lights! I was excited to see the trees getting decorated at the Mashpee Rotary recently. What is your local family “must attend” holiday event? A few years ago, I took my nephew to Edaville for their Christmas train ride - he fell asleep, but we had a good time! It's definitely worth checking out if you've never been. Would you share with us a family tradition? When we were little, we would always open one present on Christmas Eve - a new pair of pajamas - and then sit and watch Christmas Eve on Sesame Street. I still enjoy the movie, even at 37. I love the scene where Mr. Hooper brings back Ernie's rubber ducky and Bert's paperclip collection. :) If you could have one wish this holiday season, what would it be? This is a tough one - so many huge things to wish for in the world these days with all that has been going on - I guess I would just wish everyone a peaceful time. What are your festive words of advice for our families during this special time? Slow down and remember to enjoy the day. Notice the little things and take in the smiles...They might not be very festive, but they're important! What is your favorite holiday dessert? Peppermint ice cream, apple pie, molasses cookies....hard to choose! Do you have any special deals taking place? If yes, what and when, etc? I am currently running portfolio-building sessions for "Lifestyle Newborn" photos - one-hour, documentary photo sessions that take place in your home and help you to remember those first few days with you new little one! I would love to offer a special deal to anyone due in December or January... Name of Owner(s): Maryellen Kumiega 1.) How long have you lived on Cape Cod? I moved to Cape Cod and settled in Brewster in 1991 with my husband Pete, where we raised 2 daughters, now ages 21 and 22. 2.) When and why did you start your business? In October of 2007 I received the call that all parents dread. My daughter had lice! I immediately went into attack mode. After picking her up at school I went straight to the pharmacy and bought an over-the-counter lice kit and headed home ready to battle. Well little did I know that this battle was going to continue for 6 months! After using the lice kit, then a prescription from my pediatrician and a nit picker in Boston, I learned that some cases of lice are resistant to the common pesticides sold today. Through personal experience I was able to develop a process that gets rid of lice quickly and effectively. I have been treating Cape and Island families since 2009. 3.) What do you LOVE most about your job? I love that I get to meet so many interesting people, locals and Cape visitors. I always leave with a feeling of gratefulness that I have a skill that helps so many different people. 4.) How does your business help/impact local families? One of the top reasons for truancy is kids staying home due to head lice infestations. I am able to help families get back to work, school and life faster. 5.) In your opinion, what are the biggest challenges facing Cape Cod Families? Most families have 2 working parents in order to live on Cape Cod and it is very difficult for these parents to take time off when sick or have a sick child (or lice infested). 6.) If you had to pick your favorite local spot on Cape Cod (not a business), where would you pick and why? I love spending time on Nauset's outer beach with my family. I have so many memories of raising my children out there and love to see them as young adults enjoying it just as much as when they were young. 7.) Please offer a tip for our Mom Audience: Lice is not a dirty thing! They prefer clean hair. When you get that dreaded call, take a deep breath and know that a lice infestation is survivable! There is help out there and you are not alone. 8.) Any other information you would like us to share? (upcoming events? Awards? Anything you think our community would find useful, Etc) I am Cape Cod’s Original head lice nitpicker. My goal is to help families save time and money on lice and nit removal through a pesticide free process. I am also trying to educate families, schools and summer camps on the misconceptions of head lice and help people erase their feelings of shame and helplessness. Name of Owner(s): Mary Wilson, Puppeteer 1.) How long have you lived on Cape Cod? Over 30 years 2.) When and why did you start your business? I was a teacher using puppets in the classroom for many years and started professionally using puppets and doing performances 19 years ago. 3.) What do you LOVE most about your job? The reactions and joy I get from children when they interact with the puppets are so precious. I love connecting with children through experiences learning and having fun. 4.) How does your business help/impact local families? My programs are enjoyed by families with young children at community performances and private parties. Educational hands-on fun for everyone! 5.) In your opinion, what are the biggest challenges facing Cape Cod Families? Affordable and accessible child care, being able to spend quality time with your children, housing costs, and isolation if you are new to the Cape. 6.) If you had to pick your favorite local spot on Cape Cod (not a business), where would you pick and why? I love to bring people to the Chatham Fish Pier around 4pm to watch the fishing boats come in with their catches of the day, unload them, and watch the seals right from the shore. It's free and quintessential Cape Cod with the fishing industry. 7.) Please offer a tip for our Mom Audience: Moms, you are doing a great and important job! Take care of yourselves and find the joy in each of your children every day. 8.) Any other information you would like us to share? (upcoming events? Awards? Anything you think our community would find useful, Etc.) I perform puppet shows, but I also provide educator training on how to use puppets. I have taught many workshops on the local and national level. I also retail puppets during the summer months after my performances at the Cape Rep theater. Name of Owner(s): Meryl Vujs 1.) How long have you lived on Cape Cod? I moved to the Cape in 2000 to start my family. 2.) When and why did you start your business? After I had my first son, we went back to visit some friends in CT who also had a young child. They told me about this fabulous music program they were taking their daughter to called Music Together. Seeing as how I was a musician, they said I should really look into teaching this program. As soon as I got back I looked it up and immediately went to take the training. Every moment of that training was like a lightbulb lighting up in my brain. I knew I had to offer this awesome program on the Cape so I applied for my license through Music Together and got started in 2003 when I was pregnant with my second son. 3.) What do you LOVE most about your job? I LOVE seeing all those happy little faces staring up at me every day when I walk into the classroom. I LOVE teaching today's parents the importance of music education starting with their infants. I LOVE seeing the look of recognition from all the parents when someone's child demonstrates something I've been discussing in the class. And I LOVE to sing everyday! 4.) How does your business help/impact local families? The families who come through my doors don't always know what they're getting into! A lot of people just think it's something to do with their child every week to keep them busy. What they learn over time is that all children are musical and all children can gain basic music competence (being able to sing in key and hold a beat) if given a musically rich, developmentally appropriate environment early on. Once they realize how much actual learning even an infant can do and the high quality of the materials they get to take home to continue the music learning there, the price seems cheap! 5.) In your opinion, what are the biggest challenges facing Cape Cod Families? The biggest challenges facing Cape Cod families is work and housing. We are losing a lot of our young families because they cannot find steady work that will pay the rent on the very limited housing we have available. Landlords are pushing out the future of the Cape for the high weekly rental rates they can pull in in the summer. Something is going to need to change in our economy if we want to keep our young families not just living, but thriving on the cape. 6.) If you had to pick your favorite local spot on Cape Cod (not a business), where would you pick and why? My favorite spot would have to be Nauset Beach. I just love it there. 7.) Please offer a tip for our Mom Audience: Sing with your child. Every day. Without the radio or TV on. Just MAKE music and your child will start to also. You don't wait until your child can speak before you start speaking to them do you? Then don't wait until the can "do" music before you make music with them. It's how they learn! 8.) Any other information you would like us to share? (upcoming events? Awards? Anything you think our community would find useful, Etc) MMAC has won Cape Cod Life Magazine's Best Kids Activity Award for 9 years. There's a reason for that! A lot of other kids programs have come and gone but we've been around for 12 years and counting. Free library and playgroup programs are great for filling time, but when you want a real, educational program that will last your child a lifetime, come see us. Music Together is the gold standard in early childhood music and movement programs for kids newborn to 5 years. Developed 27 years ago, they continually update the program when research dictates a new finding in the area of early childhood music learning. Check out a class for free if you want. With locations all over the Cape there's sure to be one not too far from you. Eastham, Harwich, Sandwich, Falmouth and Plymouth. We also offer Ukulele lessons, GroovyKids Yoga, and Rhythm Kids classes for your slightly older child and as next steps from Music Together. |
