The Back & Forth Book by Tracy Lamperti, LMHC, BCETS In the blink of an eye our children seem to go from little ones to NOT so little ones anymore. Sometimes parents realize that their child has arrived at the next developmental level, but the parent feels like something slipped away and the connection to their child has been broken. Parents can use The Back & Forth Book with a child of any age that has begun communicating in written words. I have seen it be successful with first graders through high school. The Back & Forth Book is used for communicating feelings and ideas. Generally speaking, it is not used for logistical issues, such as leaving notes like, “Please clean your room when you finish your homework.” or, “We need to discuss your grades.” It’s not that these topics may not come up in some way, but the purpose is not for you to use the book to assert your “parent” role or your child to assume their “child” role. This is how The Back & Forth Book works;

Successful Children 4 of 4
Signs of Success in Young Children By Tracy Lamperti, LMHC, BCETS Lamperti Counseling & Consultation The first post in this series focused on catering to the every need of our infant and baby. The second post in this series focused on the Parental Shift as we begin to show and to teach your little ones that they can capture the thunder by having the feeling of accomplishing something on their own. The third post in this series focused on instilling awesome habits. Welcome to the fourth post, summary and moving on.
This story was told by my pastor many years ago. I don’t know where it originated or if I am going to get it exactly right, but here goes. A man came to visit another man with a strawberry patch. The man with the strawberry patch said to the other man, “Would you like to see my strawberry patch?” They went through the gate and the visitor said, “This doesn’t look like a strawberry patch.” And the other man, who hadn’t tended to his patch at all said, “I’m waiting for them to grow up and see if they would like to be strawberries.” If you want beautiful strawberries, you have to tend to the patch. What an amazing future lies ahead for your child!
