Hi there, I’m Kate McCarthy! In 2019 I was a fresh-faced college grad, armed with a degree in Theater and Sociology, internships at Saturday Night Live, Conan and Second City—ready to take on New York City as a young performer. Between open mics and auditions, I worked as a chess tutor for 3-5 year olds and performed with Story Pirates, a nationally acclaimed arts education organization. All my life I’ve cultivated a strong background working with kids (as a camp counselor, coach and babysitter) so it felt natural to keep it going in this new chapter of life.
Everything was just starting to gel when, of course, the pandemic hit. Artistic communities were stunned—no more creative connection in person. It was a real blow, but I couldn’t help but think of all the kids now forced inside with so many hours to fill and none of the usual outlets. As I missed my creative pursuits more and more, I also mused about the possibilities for a COVID-19 summer. And eventually, an idea came to me that wove it all together—an online creativity camp, called Kate’s Kamp.
At Kate’s Kamp, we meet as a group on Zoom for one hour every weekday, where we'll build stories, play improv and spelling games, write jokes, come up with characters, have dance parties and more! The safety of our screens allows kids from all over the country to log on and make new friends, as we hone our creativity and skills in listening, collaboration, and focus. I’m excited to be dedicating my summer to this venture, and have set up weekly camp sessions for ages 6-9 and 10-12 every week stretching through August. I also offer one-on-one or small group sessions, if your child would thrive with more individual attention. I strive to keep my service affordable, so I’ve priced my camps at $80/week, and individual sessions at $40/hr. I’m a firm believer that this summer doesn’t have to be any less joyful, enriching, and educational for children. There is so much to be learned and created even in a virtual space. Nothing empowers a child more than engaging with their own creative autonomy. So I’ve made it my mission to bring my skills and background to this new venture of Kate’s Kamp, to reinforce in kids that their ideas are valid, that they have within themselves all the necessary tools to make something funny, smart, wacky. So let’s make something together this summer!
