The Snow Library Children’s Room
The Snow Library is Orleans Public Library. It is located at 67 Main Street Orleans. In the winter it is open Monday, Thursday and Friday 10-5, Tuesday and Wednesday 10-8 and Saturday 10-4. Ann the children's librarian is very friendly and knowledgeable. Libraries are one of my family's go to places on Saturdays in late Fall, Winter and Early spring when outdoor activities are limited and any other time there is inclement weather so we have come to know many of them.
Since the Snow Library is the closest library to my house we frequent it the most. In addition to the great programs the Snow Library runs on Saturdays about once a month (in the past we have gone to Halloween story time, gingerbread house making, Animal adventures and in a few weeks a felt egg workshop) they have a cozy children's area for reading and playing. The books are well organized and generally easy to find with different books highlighted monthly. They also just got Wheelnuts! which are a graphic novels!
There is an array of toys to play with too. Under the window seats are bags with stuffed animal or puppet to go with the book (these can be checked out too). There is a Duplo table with two large bins of Duplos including Thomas the Train Duplos and tracks and a very large zoo set. If you have the time your child(ren) can make a very elaborate setup. A large and sturdy (bolted to the ground) puppet theater with over 30 puppets from a frog prince to an alligator is lots of fun too. In addition to the Duplo table, puppet theater, and comfy reading chairs in the fiction area there is a small table to do puzzles and games on.
In the children’s nonfiction area there is a large table for games and projects (great for the homeschoolers out there) and a smaller table that is equipped with colored pencils, crayons and lots of different activity sheet and coloring pages; my daughter's favorite part. Plus there are four kid homework computers that are usually available for use.
The best parts of the Snow Library Children’s room is the good selection of books, ample reading space and the toys. The biggest drawback is the kids area is not well separated from the rest of the library and puppets and Duplos can be noisy at times.
